Subject: Max HR - Training Zone Q
I trained today on the spincycle for 90 minutes and monitored my HR. My Garmin Forunner beeped 'heart rate too high'. For the first 20 min or so I maintained about 160 bpm. After that I increased my effort to 186-188 bpm for 70 minutes.

According to everything I could find on training zones my HR should be around 158. I used the formula: (220-34(my age) x 85% = 158. I put effort into my session but at no time do I feel I am over doing it. if anything my legs do fatigue later in the workout but I push through it. I just started back into cycle training this month and this was my 4th session. I feel soreness afterwards and moreafter the next day. However, I have noticed that after each workout I recover faster from soreness/fatigue.

I cant see training at 158 bpm because it feels like little effort to me. I was putting out 255 watts and 95 rpms, finishing the last 20 minutes at 105-115 rpms on the cycle. Am I ok with passing my training zone? If my MAX HR is 186, did I goof by training at 186+ bpm ? I like to train hard but I also dont want to have a freakin heart attack.

You've just learned first hand that the formula doesn't work.

Here's an article explaining why.

220 - AGE = Max HR does not work.  There is a very long thread here I'd recommend reading on the specifics, but the short version of the problem is that you used the wrong formula to calculate max HR.

Agreed.  "wrong formula" was a poor choice of words.

I know very little about training to HR, but IF your max HR was 186, there is no physical way your hr could hit 188   Your max is probably in the 190s somewhere, the only way to know for sure is through tests.

Actually, if the OP successfully rode for 70 minutes at 186 - 188, then their HR max is probably closer to 205 - 210.

And there is zero reason to "test" for max HR other than being able to say, "Hey, my max HR is - blank - what about you?"
