Yeah, I think you'd be challenged to grab and stow more than one thing while rolling on the bike. If not, then I guess that I need to work on my aid station exchanges. |

Related to a marine to get on base? I thought Vandegrift was closed to the public. Stuart Mesa is open, and there are about 3 very short climbs between T1 and Las Pulgas but not much to worry about. ETA - I guess the frontside goes on Vandegrift as well. I don't think you can get on base in a car, on a bike you can Edited by ChrisM 2010-09-06 11:38 PM |

If the ^^^ is a true, and we wanted to do a BT bike preview of the course, I'd be willing to help out. I have never raced the course, but am now in San Diego, am active duty, and am doing the race. So, if we wanted to do a BT training day, let me know and we can see what we can do...that is if they let Army active duty count. And seriously, in the 50's for the swim....do most y'all use neoprene caps when it's that cool? I can't talk myself out to the ocean yet....plus I need a long sleeve wetsuit (it's enroute to me now). Are there any lakes good for OWS around here too? |

Are there any lakes good for OWS around here too? This is the only race I have ever used one...but yes. Neoprene hoodie is good idea. In 07 I was in th3 M30-34 division and our wave didn't start for 2 hours, and it was still cold. ANother idea is to double up on the latex cap if thats all you have come race morning. ANother thing to consider is getting tented goggles...that sun made it very difficult to sight on the way back in. |

Expert 977 Huntington Beach | Subject: RE: Oceanside 70.3 Not related to a Marine, but if you have an id you can go on the base on your bike. The guard told me I can go anywhere I wanted but to stay on the main roads. I got lost and ended up on Vandegrift (spelling?). Yes, there is a sign on it that says no bikes. (Probably because there is no shoulder.) However, I was totally lost and if someone stopped to say I couldn't ride on that road I would have gladly accepted a lift back to the gate. haha. Heck yes, that would be awesome to all meet up and go for a ride on the base! Hook us up! |

BTW, ID access gets you the frontside, had you gone up Christianitos and turned onto Basilone/San Maeo they would have shot stopped you. I've done the frontside a bunch on various rides, but the backside is where the fun stuff is. |

Extreme Veteran 483 San Diego | Subject: RE: Oceanside 70.3 Water temp was 59° and 58° the past two years and a non-factor for me (in 2009 I wore a neoprene hoodie and this year I did not). There have been much colder years, though - one where it was so cold they offered a duathlon option. My guess at the over/under would be 57°. You can preview the run course anytime and it is true that you can get on base and ride the first portion (~25 miles) of the bike course, but you won't be able to ride out on Basilone / Vandegrift until race day. There is also no swimming in the harbor, so you also have to wait until race day for the swim. You can swim out on the ocean side, next to the pier, though. There was just a Labor Day swim race out there and people were remarking that the temperature was 62° - kinda cold for this time of year (thankfully, I'm not doing Gatorman this year!). I would be up for a preview ride of the Stuart Mesa / coastal section and perhaps a brick run on the course sometime. Also, regarding transition, there are assigned racks based on a range of bib numbers that correspond to the respective waves. Individual spots are not assigned, so it is first come, first served in the morning. The transition area is huge and be prepared to run a long way during T1. The swim exit is near the front of transition and you have to run all of the way to the back (outside of transition, along the fence), enter from the rear and then run the entire length of transition again, stopping wherever along the way your rack happens to be before running the rest of the way out through the front with your bike. The entire run could be close to 1/4 mile. Expect your T1 time to be longer than normal. When you bike back into T2, you bike alongside transition again, up and over carpeted ramps they've set up over curbs (I think it's through the swim start staging corral) and run in from the rear with your bike after dismounting. |

Subject: RE: Oceanside 70.3 akrenik - 2010-09-10 1:15 PM jnboado - 2010-09-10 11:07 AM What wheel setups would be ideal for this course? Are any of you using a disc wheel or is that bad for climbs? How would the costal crosswinds be with a disc wheel? The times I've ridden the course (mostly going south but in 07 at the race going north), there isn't really any coastal crosswind. In fact, prevailing is usually a slight headwind going north, so it would be a benefit. And of course the last 10 miles The climbing at California really isn't all that much, when all is said and done. From what I recall scouting it a couple years ago, it's ab out 26-2800 feet? Which over 56 miles is nothing really. (ETA - nevergivin posted this link. Even less, 2300 feet... https://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/map.asp?routeid=111546) (ETA II - that map is a little screwed up between Las Pulgas and Old PCH..... but nothing affecting elevation) The area that is sketchy is inland on the backside, and maybe halfironmike or someone else that was there in '10 can comment, I guess the wind funnels through the canyones and they did have some nasty croswinds back there on the descents. But I don't think it warrants against a disc. Of course, I ride HED 3s and am 200+ (+++ ) and I am not going anywhere on those, so what do I know? Edited by ChrisM 2010-09-10 3:56 PM |

The two times I've done Oceanside, I used an 808 on the front and disk on the back and I'm only 135 or so lbs. No problem for me. If you paid the money for a disk, use it. |
