Hi Jamie,

Have you read the Triathlete's Training Bible yet?  If not, I would start there.  If you have already ready that, I would consider either Going Long or possibly Training with Power.

Those should definitely get you started.

Hi Jamie

I am also new to ironman training  / racing and went through the same issue as you.
Which book is best?
I purchased the Triathlon training bible and aslo Don Finks, Be iron fit.
I found the triathlon training bible to be to complicated and in depth however it does have some interesting reads in it.
Don Finks book, be iron fit is great.
Not complicated and as most of us are age groupers with family, jobs etc I found the training in his book easy to implement and also a great book to get inspiration from.
hope this helps
Go hard or go hone

I found Becoming an Ironman: First Encounters with the Ultimate Endurance Event inspiring. Amazon says:

A collection of personal stories about the experience of competing in one’s first Ironman triathlon. This is the ultimate test of endurance: a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run, all raced end-to-end in one grueling day—and these stories tell it straight: what to expect, how to prepare, what was rewarding, what was miserable. These stories come from men and women of all ages and abilities. Some are stories from the champions, and some from those who did not finish. Together they testify to all the joy and agony of the race; and they provide priceless personal advice on nutrition, equipment, clothing, mental preparation, emotional fatigue, terrain, and weather. An unforgettable ode to an extraordinary endurance sport—a book for anyone who wants to become an ironman.

I have been very happy with Don Fink's Be Iron Fit which just came out in a second edition.

My vote goes to "BeIronFit", very clear and understandable, alot of the other books I have read and are suggested have been too complicated for me and come from the point of view that you are a pro and have unlimited time. "BeIronFit" was exactly what I was looking for, had excellent tips and a number of plans for normal athletes trying to fit training into their busy life.

A great read!

Also the other thing I read is Triathlete Magazine, I enjoy the training sections, just don't be tempted to buy all the new gear from the pages and pages of advertising.

Good Luck!

x2 for Don's book  Be Iron Fit. He has a second addition out now as well. I might pick that one up myself.
