Subject: Prarieman vs Redman

I'm trying to decide which one of these races to sign up for this year as an IMFL warm up race. I've read reports on both races. Opinions?Redman would probably be my first pick. Although driving to Dallas might not be that bad.

Are there any other HIM races during that time frame that you would recommend? I looked at Augusta but that would probably require too much  time off from work. I'd like to save as many vacation days for IMFL and other Texas races. Who knows I might need vacation days for that May IM in the Woodlands.

I am so glad you posted this - these are the 2 I am currently trying to decide between as well. Hopefully you'll get some good feedback!

Personally I loved Redman, the back of the course was a bit rough (chip&seal), but overall it was a nice course with a beautiful run. But, Dallas is half the drive so I'm torn!

Well, if I had to pick... and I live in Dallas... and well, I am picking ONE of those this year as my A race... I would pick Redman.

Why?

Doing a Half Ironman at the Grand Prairie/Joe Pool location would be a beat down for me. I did a Oly out there and it was a beat down. It's hot, it's flat... it's really hot... and the beat down from the sun, running over the dam was a beat down.

*Note: Heat does not bother me usually! I did Kentucky for my Ironman and we had a 95 degree day when I raced. I was fine with that!*

I just don't like the venue for long races. Short races fine. But the bike and run route for longer stuff, no thanks.

I will say that Ironhead Race Productions puts on a solid race. Jack is a great RD and the Prairieman as a race will be a solid one. So my decision has NOTHING to do with the RD putting it on. Just the venue.

So, instead of making Prairieman my HIM A race, I am making Redman and traveling for it. This is coming from a gal who doesn't really travel for races. I only did Longhorn in Austin because my boyfriend's parents live there and we have a free place to stay.

Tyler,
Subject: RE: Prarieman vs Redman
i was too debating between redman and prairie man once. I am going with prairie man because it's close and heckuva a lot cheaper and closer. I don't see the course being better than the other from what I heard about redman. I have heard prairie man is very fast though.

Why did you pick Augusta? Besides the swim how is the bike course?

Are you flying into Atlanta and driving to Augusta? If so which airline are you using? I'll fly if we go to Redman. IF the price wasn't that much more I might consider it.

Did the Prairieman half and the Redman full.  As far as weather is concerned, Prairieman felt much hotter.  But that's likely because the run on the dam is absolutely unshaded.  Redman felt hot too, but not near as hot as Prairieman.  But of course weather is variable.  You never know what you'll get.

The bike course at Prairieman is about as fast as fast gets.  Good surface too.  Very fun if you like flat.  The run course is flat too.  The Redman run course is a bit more scenic and shaded.  But it's also pancake flat.  However, the bike course at Redman was a bit rough.  Not really chipseal but alot of potholes and cracks in the road.

Redman was the Halfmax Championship when I raced, so there was alot more people and alot more hooplah around the race in comparison to Prairieman.  But I'm not sure if that's always the case when Redman is not a championship type race.

Both race directors were top-notch and put on a smooth efficient race.  Redman actually gave nutritional products to AG award winners, which I thought was a brilliant idea.

Hope this helps a little.  I should have a couple of race reports for each.  They could be descriptive, although I don't remember right now.

long story short.  originally registered with a bunch of friends, that whole BT mentor group thing like we did at Lone Star.  then, two months ago we found out we're moving to atlanta.  lucky in a sense as almost no travel cost.  that said, you'll have a place to stay in atlanta if we're there by then.

haven't ridden the course yet, but from what i'm told and read...rolling hills, mostly good surface, well monitored.  i suck on the bike (swim & run too) but I'm looking forward to ride that isn't flat.  run is 2 loops in augusta,  spectator friendly.  and flat.  and the swim of course, when people i swim faster than are going 23:17, yeah good stuff!

it'd be cool to race with you again and air tran flies out of hobby to atlanta all day long.  but it sounds like prairieman might be your bingo.  branson 70.3 is out there as well but now you're looking at an 11 hour ride, so why not just drive to augusta ;-).

Miami 70.3 is my A race this year, the heat at Prairieman is great training.

Given that Prairieman is hot, Dallas is closer and it is cheaper, I'm sold on Prairieman.

I can not really attest to how Prarieman might be, though I have done a couple of sprints on part of its course and it could be brutal in the heat.
I did Redman 70.3 as my very first 70.3 and loved the whole thing. As mentioned the back side of the bike course is potty in spots.
Plenty o' volunteers, etc...

Did the prairieman half 2 years ago and the heat on the run was brutal. I don't mind the heat as long as there are parts to cool off for a second. There was nothing on the dam, and it was just hot and humid. The race itself was very well ran.

Prarieman is a lot closer. But after reading the reports on the heat it might be worth driving/flying to Redman.
