Subject: Eating before really early race start time

I have a sprint tri this weekend here in Tucson.  First wave hits the pool at , and all bikes need to be in transition by .  I’m going to be waking up between and to get ready for the race and be there by .  So I’m not going to have the usual 3 hrs or so before the race to eat and let the food hit the system.  I’ll probably be eating at around , which is 1.5 hrs before race start.  So I doubt I’ll be able to eat the heavier stuff like bagels w/ PB and oatmeal like I usually do.

Any suggestions on breakfast items that can be eaten that soon before the start?  Again, this is a sprint tri (750 m swim, 12 mi bike, 3 mi run), but I’m going to be hammering during the race, trying to better my time from last year’s race on the same course.  So I can’t have anything mucking up the works.

Maybe just something like a banana and the sports drink of your choice (and some caffeine...yikes...5:45?). You could get up at 2am and eat your normal breakfast (with a really early dinner the day before). Or hell, just don't even go to sleep. Dang...5:45.

Yeah, they are trying to beat the heat and get everyone off the course before it starts to get seriously warm, which is around 9am.

I'm not a morning person, so 3:30-4am wake-up time is about as early as I'll be able to do.  I couldn't do the 2am thing...especially to eat.

In the mornings after my workouts I usually have a bottled protein drink that I buy at the grocery store (it's called Naked Juice).  1 bottle has 20g of protein.  Not sure if that's too much protein before a race.  If so, I could drink 1/2 a bottle (only 10g then) and eat part of a breakfast bar to get a little of something solid in my stomach so that it doesn't start growling.  Of course I've never tried this, so it would be something new on race day and breaking that rule.

Yeah but I don't see how you wouldn't be able to not do something new in this case. The bottom line is for a sprint, you're not going to need a lot of calories. I would just make sure to eat a good dinner, and then when you get up eat a little something that's as "low risk" as possible. Then maybe an gel (if you're a gel person) right before the race.

Banana perhaps.  Otherwise maybe hold off and down some Hammer gel about 15 minutes before you race and again while on the bike.  That way you're not digesting food while racing.

With an hour and a half until the race start, I would go ahead and have the bagels and oatmeal. You might want to cut the portions a little so you're not too stuffed but with lots of fluid I think I'd be fine digesting that. Your mileage may vary, though.

I usually don't eat much breakfast, ever, but prerace I usually drink an Ensure, water and coffee, and about a half hour before my start, I take a gel and water. Worked for my on Sunday.

I think you'd want to look for food high on the glycemic index so it will be digested before your start.

Good luck in your race!

GNC and other body building store will have drinks that are pure carbs. I get one that's 80 something grams in 20 oz with only 5g of sugar.

get two, try one a few hours before your tune-up workout, and see how the stomach handles it. all liquids so your guy will be empty for the 100% effort.

I'd probably do 1/2 of that.  So either oatmeal or bagel.  Or, you could go for my favorite (and only) pre-race meal - a Clifbar.

Note: Anything new that you're going to do on race day, you should try it out in training first.

I think I'd follow this one...carb up good the night before and very light in the morning...1/2 bagel w/pb and jelly would be my personal choice, but if you can't take solids maybe 1/2 of your Naked Juice.  DEFINETLY not a whole one!  Bananas are good if you like them, for some reason they haunt me if I eat them pre-workout.

All of these are good suggestions -- I go with the oatmeal and Ensure breakfast with Gatorade on the trip to the venue and a gel and water about an hour before the start. I try to throw down about 300 calories per hour until about 1 hour before the start of the race.

I can tell from your avitar and your signature you have something about bananas.  I used to do bananas prerace, but between multiple trips to the potty, and reminders during the race of what I ate, I switched.

Finally settled on Clif Bars.  1 before a sprint, 2 before Olympic.  Gel right before swim start, and in Olympic maybe another gel on the run.

I'm doing this same race, but I'll be coming in from out of town on Friday, the 1st. This is early, but I usually have to be at work by 5:30, so it shouldn't interupt my routine too much. I appreciate all the advice everyone has given. I just hope I get my morning caffeine fix. I need coffee, otherwise my system goes into shock and I'm grumpy all morning. BTW-I've read on other posts that most BT'ers meet before or after the race. Since this is my first one, I was hoping to meet some other BT'ers also. Let me know if there is a BT meeting, either before or after.

Clif Bars I can handle.  Maybe I'll do that for BF.  I've had Clif bars during races, so I know those won't mess me up.

Thanks for the advice everyone!

Would love to meet ya!    There should be 4 BTers there...you, me, Gwozdzilla, and dorkboy.  I'll be wearing my purple Tucson Tri Girls jersey, and you can see what I look like in my photo albums.  If you find me, I can introduce you to Gwozdzilla as she's in the same tri club.  I've only met dorkboy once so I don't know if I could pick him out of a crowd again.  But meeting beforehand and saying "hi" will make it easier to find each other at the end.

I would eat well the day before and go for fruit juice or a sports drink, with banana's for breakfast. Works for me!

Sounds good to me. I will have a black and red tri suit on, and chances are that my wife will be with me.
  • She is easily recognizeable. She is Korean and always wears a white Nike hat. I am 5'10" and 140 lbs, black hair. Sometimes wear glasses - sometimes not.

I down a protein shake before morning workouts. It seems to give me enough energy to get there, but it doesn't sit in your stomach. Only a suggestion, I've never had one before a race.
