Subject: IMFL and the oil spill

I know there are a lot of BTers headed to IMFL this Nov. Anyone getting worried about how this might effect the event? Anyone heard anything from any sources as to how this thing might affect the race? I'm a total spazz on the swim and manage to choke enough water during the swim to stay hydrated for the entire race - Ok, maybe not that much water but still...... throw in a tarball or two and I imagine I'm gonna be hawking up petroleum product at T1.

I'm not worried.

I have a lot to do between now and then. I try to worry only about stuff I can control. I can't control an oil spill.

Yeah, it came up as a topic in the IMFL thread.  Like Kathy said, we really can't do anything about it.  Will I be upset if it cancels the swim?  Yup.  But probably not quite as upset as I would be if this had been my first IM.  I had a lot more riding on my first IM. This is my best chance to do FL since I live an hour away right now, but there's always next year, right?  That's my plan.  If they cancel the swim I'll do my du and sign up for next year.  The travel next year is just likely to be more difficult for me.

Other IM's have had the swim cancelled...with much less warning.  At least we have several months to think about the possiblity.  For my part I really hope BP can get their act together...both for the ocean and for the IM.  Only time will tell.

That is along the lines of what I was curious about Jennifer. They will just drop the swim and make it a du? I think that would kind of tick me off. I think I would rather see the event canceled than see it shortened. That kind of lessens the accomplishment for me personally. If they drop the swim and make it a du, I think I'll stay home and make another race my first IM.

Yeah, I guess it would depend on how early they tell us and how much money was already invested.  If it was my first IM and I had not already paid for travel or condo upfront I would probably stay home too.  But, I live an hour away...so there really isn't any transpo or lodging cost for me.  I'll show  up no matter what they decide.

And this is coming from a person who does the best in the swim!  The swim is where I gain my time on everyone!

I guess you could also register for a non-M-dot as a backup maybe?

I am just glad it most likely won't be a "day of" decision like other IM's.  I think that would absolutely be THE WORST...to show up race morning and have the swim cancelled for high winds or something like that IM in Australia a few years back.  We should know fairly well in advance if their plan is to cancel the swim and that somehow makes it easier to bear IMHO.
