Subject: First time Sprint

Hey my name is Sam and I have been training for a sprint tri in NH.  I am considered a clydesdale.  At 5'11" and 240lbs my biggest challenge is my running.  My chest measures about 50 inches and my waste is about 38 and the thighs come in about 27-28.  The reason for the measurements is so people understand I am not the typical 5'11" 240lb individual.  I presently am swimming in a pool about 3x week for 25-30 minutes a clip(1200 yds), about 50-60miles a week on a bike 2-3x week, and run about 10 miles a week.  Strength training is also included along with karate training. I have had three meniscectomies but they were twenty years ago. Obviously my first goal is to finish the race.  I am a little confused about wearing a wetsuit and if you wear your bike/run shorts beneath the suit.  Also, someone mentioned that for the distance of the swim .25 miles it wasn't practical to wear a suit.  If you don't wear a wetsuit do you ride your bike wet? Weird questions that come up.  Race is in 7 weeks from Saturday.  thought I would start asking.

I am training for my first sprint as well-instead of bike shorts you might want to consider buying some tri shorts. These are made to dry much faster than bike shorts and you can swim in them. Wet suits are recommended for water temps 70 or less no matter what the distance- what will you water temp be for the race?

I'll check into the tri shorts. Thanks.  As for water temperature, tough to say.  We are in NH so it is possible the water will never get above 70.

Hi Sam,
Welcome to BT. Based on your training numbers it sounds like you are already quite prepared for a Sprint Tri.
To answer your questions: yes, you wear your Tri shorts under your wetsuit. I also were my tri top under my wetsuit as well. You will be wet when you get on the bike no matter what! The wetsuit lets water through. If your goal is to finish and be as comfortable as possible, then wearing a wetsuit makes sense but if you are 'racing' for a time then I would skip wearing the wetsuit for a 400m swim. I've raced short triathlons in July in Lake Ontario without a wetsuit - its cool but ok.

Do you use any sort creams or salves to help reduce chafing due to the moisture?

Eat to maintain energy but dont overthink it....oatmeal 2 hrs before start. Taper with a short bike the day before but no lifting. If you sweat like Shaq bring some gator for T1 and a water with a couple inch's of ice in it for the run out...dont eat too many flies.

Body Glide will keep you from chafing.  Get it at most sports stores and definitely at a tri store.  It looks like a stick of deodorant.

THANKS !! Everybody!! I just completed my first tri today. Super excited.  Definitely will learn from this one. Went a little off-track with my swim but still finished in good time.  The run is definitely my challenge.  The bike went well.  Any tips on improving time? I did a sprint S-.25mile ;b-15mile; r-3.1Mile(?) finished in 1:56:53. I wsa excited to finish under two hours.  Can't wait to do the next one ! Goal under 1:30

Did they start your swim every 3 seconds instead of waves if so how did you like that...The only Tip would be to lose some bulk and do more Cardio...but. Congrats on a great outcome

Five second interval time trial start. Losing bulk has always been the goal. I know it will take time and it is a process so I'm in it for the long haul. Thanks

Hello All:

Now that the first triathlon is behind me I am registered for two more sprints.  One in 4 weeks and another in eight weeks.  Any tips on training/rest regimens.  I have continued to work with 30-60miles a week bike, 6-10 miles a week running and 2000-4000 yards week swimming.  Should I work on my weakness, continue the same, slow down?  Any suggestions?
