The article hits home with me certainly. I did my first tri last year at age 50. Five years ago I was in the early stages of congestive heart failure due to a congential heart defect (bicuspid aortic valve). Without open heart surgery I was told I had three years left. After surgery to get a new mechanical aortic valve, my cardiologist suggested to do more aerobic exercise...
Now 1-1/2 years after starting to train seriously, my resting heart rate has gone 72 to 50 BPM, and the enlargement my left ventricle has reversed itself.
I have no illusions about any podium finishes (I'm slow as a turtle), only getting to end and improving my own performance every time. I love training, and the inherent cross-training aspects of triathlons certainly helps to take stress off my now 52 year old knee joints.
Being an empty-nester with an understanding, supportive wife also helps a lot.
All I can say is life is great - enjoy every day!

Very inspiring...my dad use to be a marathon runner until he had an accident. He still runs some, but not very much. When he heard I was doing tri's he got really excited and even offered to help me with race fees and equipment. I think he's secretly considering this himself...who knows, with a little encouragement we may race together one day!

Mark,

thanks for sharing your very inspiring story. That is awesome. I was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy (without heart failure) 2 years ago and thought my life was over when I had to start on beta blockers. But since training for tris (I've always been an avid exerciser), I'm in the best shape of my life . Keep up the great work!!

Pam

My dad started doing tris about 15 years ago.  He was actually excited to turn 60 because he is now in the next age group up and he knows he will win his races in the next season!

I can beat him swimming but he just flies past me on the bike and running.  I've only just started doing tris this year but Dad is all excited coz now he has someone in the family who understands what he does and we even did one of the races together this season.  although he flew past me on the bike and finished ages before I did.

I only hope to be able to compete with the 50+ AGers when I hit 50 in 6.5 years.
