Subject: RE: Tri article on Yahoo/Wall Street Journal Online The article hits home with me certainly. I did my first tri last year at age 50. Five years ago I was in the early stages of congestive heart failure due to a congential heart defect (bicuspid aortic valve ). Without open heart surgery I was told I had three years left. After surgery to get a new mechanical aortic valve, my cardiologist suggested to do more aerobic exercise...
Now 1-1/2 years after starting to train seriously, my resting heart rate has gone 72 to 50 BPM, and the enlargement my left ventricle has reversed itself.
I have no illusions about any podium finishes (I'm slow as a turtle ), only getting to end and improving my own performance every time. I love training, and the inherent cross-training aspects of triathlons certainly helps to take stress off my now 52 year old knee joints.
Being an empty-nester with an understanding, supportive wife also helps a lot.
All I can say is life is great - enjoy every day!
