Subject: Last minute Marathon tips please!
I will be taking part in my first marathon on Saturday.
I know some of it will be fun, and some of it will hurt, but I'm getting quite excited about the race.
Do any of you have any last minute advice or tips you can share with me?

Thanks!

Run slow enough through the first half to converse with other runners.  Walk the water stops.  When you see a camera, put your thumbs up like the Fonz and smile.

x2 on the run slow in the first half.  Whatever your goal, do not fly early.  You will be tempted because you will feel so good and your adreneline will be flowing.  Resist, save something for mile 21-26.

Most of all, have fun, this will always be your first.  There will be plenty of opportunities to go fast in the future.

Don't forget to enjoy the race. Don't look at it as 3 miles down, 23 to go. Just take it in small pieces and have fun!

Ignore everything and run your race. Other people, spectators, the watch on your wrist. Trust in your training, and run.

Make sure you locate the Porta Potties early, there will be lines right before the start.   Don't jackrabbit the start, even if you feel super good.

Always keep moving forward.   Smile alot and have fun.

As others have said, make sure you go out at a reasonable pace.  That includes not passing a bunch of people by weaving around - takes a lot of energy (as I learned the hard way at the New York Marathon, 2005!).  Try to make the first mile your slowest - you have 25.2 more to make it up!  Most of all, have fun and appreciate the results of all of your hard work in training.

+whatever on running your own race.  Don't get caught up in the excitement of the start and run too fast.  You'll pay for it later.  It only takes a little to ruin your whole race.  Just run your pace and if you did the training you will be fine.

The "true" half way point in a marathon is mile 20, IMO.

My first mary I felt great at 13.1 and decided to really push the final half and turn in a really good negative split. Totally hit the wall at mile 21 and crawled the last 5 miles.

The next year, on the same course, held myself steady until mile 20, when I still felt really good, then turned on the gas, had a negative split and took 21 minutes off my prior year's marathon (from a 4:06 to a 3:45).

Just my two cents worth!

Most of all, try to enjoy it and have some fun!

Let us know how it goes.

Look up as you cross the finish line.  People are always looking down or hitting the button on their watches and as such, your photo of you crossing the finish line of your first marathon will not be so good.  I just did my first marathon last month and was given that advice (about the watch).  I didn't hit the watch button but my friend and I were both looking down as we waved our arms in the air.  Very disappointing!

I carried a bottle of water for my marathon and I am so glad I did.  It is a bit of a pain but I was able to dump water and gatorade into the bottle as I went through each water stop.  It really helped me hydrate.  Dehydration has always been a big problem for me while running.

Good luck.  Have fun.

Bring enough to eat during the race. I could have used more nutrition during my first (and only), but thought I would be ok to carry less.  Also, have fun, smile and thank the volunteers.

Don't go out too fast! You'll feel really good at the beginning --- as a result of the taper, other runners, spectators, the excitement at the race --- and it's so easy to go out much faster than what you can do. You'll pay for this toward the end.

Oh, and enjoy !!

Do this and everything else is just details.

Don't do what I did last weekend for my first though.  All I had before it was a Venti coffee from SBUX and then I decided I wasn't going to take my last Gu on mile 20 because I felt fine and wasn't running that hard....if you have a nutrition plan try to stick to it regardless of how you feel because your judgment may be clouded the deeper you go into the race.

If it is a large marathon that also has a half, you might find it nice to carry a small bottle of water that you can toss away when finished.

This will get you through the craziness that are the first few water stops and by the time you have emptied the bottle the water stops should be less congested.

Most importantly remember to have fun & enjoy the experience

Have fun!  Take in plenty of fluids along the way.  Go with a comfortable pace and try not to worry about time.  Be prepared for the last 6 miles...they will be tough.  I remember hitting the wall about mile 18-19 in my first marathon, but you just push through it.  Doesn't make any sense to run 20 or 21 miles and not finish(unless you injured) the last few miles.  You'll be fine!  Lots of good advice to follow from others that have posted.

My meager contributions after 4 marathons (and thousands of training miles):

  • Bodyglide in the important areas.
  • Have a nutrition plan, and know when to modify it.
  • Drink something every mile.  Helps pass the time if nothing else.
  • Find someone running a similar pace and run with them.  Don't be afraid to leave them, or let them leave you, but keep tabs on them.
  • Rest well Thursday night.  You won't rest Friday night.
  • Double-knot your shoes (or use Yankz), but not too tight.  Your feet will swell with that distance on hard-surface.
  • Sunscreen!
  • Don't worry about the pain.  Everyone else will be in the same boat.
  • Above all else, thank the volunteers.  You can't race without them.  Same for medical staff, etc.

agree with above.  Get lots of rest on Thursday...and try to stay off your feet on Friday.

Start slow...it should feel like you're running with someone who runs 2mm slower than you.  With the adrenaline flowing, and your legs fresh from the taper, your body will want to go fast.

The first 13.1 miles should feel TOO EASY.  If it feels "just right", you're playing with fire.

Trim your toe nails! I forgot to do this for a half marathon this past weekend and ended up with a gigantic blister underneath my entire right big toe. I drained it, but I think that nail will fall off. Needless to say, it's quite painful now.

However, I may alone with this issue. Otherwise, just enjoy it and pace yourself.

Ignore the spectators at mile 20 shouting "you're almost there!"   You're not.  This is where the hard miles start!  One thing I always do is dedicate the last six miles to a person in my family.  Like mile 20 to 21 is for my daughter Sydney and I think about her for that mile.  Then mile 21 to 22 is for my daugher Olivia and so on.  I write them down on a slip of paper and put it in my fuel belt though, because by then my mind is fried and I can't rememember what mile is for who.  Mile 25 to 26.2 is always for ME though!

And, like everyone else has said, enjoy the experience.  Soak it all up. It's amazing.

I'm just going to rehash what everyone else has said.

The first 20 miles are just foreplay. The real work is in the last 6 miles. Don't be a youngin' and be premature, save some for the end so you can finish strong.
