As per the title really, I am trying to gauge an average / semi decent time for where I am at.

1, what was your 1st 70.3 time ?

2, how long had you been training / r?acing before? you ventured into this terr?itory ??

Don't. It's difficult even to compare one HIM to another due to hills, heat, rain, and all sorts of other things that will make it wonderful or make it a trudge through hell.

Go in it to finish and you'll do well.

I think the best way for you to figure this is to go the results page of a race that you are interested in doing and check out the past results for whomever you consider your competition (most likely your AG).  You can see exactly where the times fall that way.

What constitutes a decent time?  That's very much for each individual to decide.  Many people are happy to merely finish the distance the first time out.  A handful of people with good speed in all three disciplines are targeting a finish somewhere under 5 hrs.  There's no right answer.

The best advice is to do your training, and then enjoy the race.  Smile and have fun, whether you're crossing the line in 4:45 or 7:30.

i think the points above a valid.

from personal experience i tried to hit a 5 hr mark, i grossly overestimated the distances, the heat and the wind.  the day of race, there were 25 mph winds on the bike it is simply brutal (14 mph hr into head wind  on the bike), my legs were crushed and with the heat that day instead of running 8 min miles i ran 10 min miles.

6:18 (shooting for <6) and it was a year after my first tri.

What are your expectations for a 1.2 mile swim?  56 mile ride?  13.1 mile run?

You should be able to look at previous year's results and see where you fall.  Keep in mind that year-to-year weather can make a significant difference in results.

1. They used a calendar to measure for my first. I went to hard on the bike and learned a very important lesson about pacing during the run walk BUT I had a smile on my face when I finished
2. couch to HIM in 10 months (losing 50 lbs in the process)

The second time I did that HIM I was about 45 minutes faster. That had to do with better conditions on the bike (less wind), but also being better prepared and having more experience. The first time at any distance is an adventure and a bit of a learning experience; enjoy it.

6:16 and was woefully underprepared. First season of doing Triathlon. Now, I'm sub 4:50...

To make matters worse, it was a big wave start and I was one of the first out of the water and got to here nice swim chicago (CTC jersey) for about an hour and half...

5:48, mine was actually a 73.3, billed as a HIM but with a 59-mile bike.

Had been doing tris for a year, but running for seven and biking for five at that point.

I was adequately trained but because it was my first at that distance I paced conservatively, especially on the bike.

5:58.  First tri in 13 years (only other one was an olympic distance).  I trained for about 6 months specifically for the race with a background in running and cycling.  Disastrous race with an undiagnosed mechanical on the bike that easily caused me to work way harder than I should have to maintain the pitiful pace that I did.

5:19, on a HOT windy day. As with many others, horribly not ready for the distance, walked about a 3rd of the run.

this was my 3rd tri, about 5 weeks after my first.

my longest workout in each sport was 33mi on the bike a few days out, run 8 miles a week before, and my longest swim was my sprint tri two weeks prior.

did alright in the swim, started hammering the bike and thought, hey i am catching people, awesome!!
lets go faster!! came off the bike about 13th overall, and promtly died. legs cramped up so bad i ould not move for a min or two, then started hobbling.

that was the longest "run" of my life.

Given the difficulty in setting time goals for a race (for all the reasons discussed above - weather, difference in courses, etc.) - or comparing your times between two different HIMs, I try to set my targets for each upcoming HIM by my percentile finish in my AG

For example, in my first HIM, I tried to finish in 50th percentile (i.e. faster then 50% of my AG)....the goal for my next HIM is 65% percentile.   So I then check on prior year results to see the the time/splits for those in my AG who finished in 65% percentile...that gives me some rough times to shoot for, since I do think it's a great motivator to try to shoot for a particular time, even with all the impact from weather and course variables.

With large enough fields - which most HIMs seem to have - it seems to me that the "percentile target" is a good, consistent measure to establish time goals for a particular race and provide at least some better means of comparing your race performances.

Hope this helps and good luck!!!

6:09. It was my 5th year of doing triathlons. I was very happy with this. I had expected to come in between 6:30 and 7 hrs. I'm going to do it again, and hopefully will beat 6 hrs.

P.S. I came in first for my AG (the old chicks), but 159th out of 230.

My goal for my first HIM (on the 26th - yipes!) is 6:30-6:45, but it's a very hilly course (Tinman) and I have less than a year experience on the swim and bike.  Time goals were developed via a combination of looking at my times in training, race times others have posted, and getting out on the actual course.

5:35 about 10 weeks or so after my first tri which was a sprint.  Taught myself to swim and bought my first bike about 6 months before it in prep for a sprint.  I did the sprint and then slots opened up and signed up on a whim with about 8 weeks to go before race day.

Really had zero swim and bike training before that and very very little run training but was starting at a zero base.  Luckily I found I out that I was naturally pretty strong on the bike so that helped but I was still way under-prepared for the distance in every discipline IMO, but that is the big variable.  How much are you willing to train and commit to doing well?  You can do your first one on 7hrs a week or 14hrs a week training....which one do you think will have you more prepared?

All that being said, I think if you spend a few months putting a decent amount of training in but nothing crazy, for a middle aged guy in decent shape going in between 5:30-6hrs seems like a pretty good time assuming average course and conditions.  Going under 5:30 I would consider very good and under 5 would be pretty spectacular.  Good luck!

5:15 after about a year and a half of training (and probably 8 sprint/Oly under my belt).  Run wasn't what I thought (big surprise) but bike went a lot faster so I was 15 minutes faster than my estimated time.  I had done lots of long runs and rides beforehand and thought I knew what to expect and how to pace.  My goal was always to race it though- if I wanted to "just finish" then I knew I wasn't ready.  I don't like slogfests, if I can help it!

Thanks LazyRiver, I think this is a brilliant way to get an idea of a personal target !

This one tomorrow is our own made up route and having done my math, I was looking sub 7 hrs, but now i feel completely motivated to do aim for under 6, ok I cant swim or run hugely quicker but a little overall makes a difference and I think i can ride smarter making up some time on my estimates. It is a training run for my buddy who has a race later this month so we will be holding back a bit, but it is more about experiencing the distance tomorrow rather than setting a quick time, ok were setting a time, be it a slow one to be beaten in a race environment.

I'll tell you in 9 days.  Smile

Ever since I signed up late last summer, I've been trying to figure out my time-goals (yes, I know - I should just focus on finishing), and then re-adjusting them as I've gone along.

Last year was my first year training (no endurance background at all) and I did 3 olympic races.  My training took a hit last fall with the swine flu, and then I had pneumonia in April (I don't think I was overtrained - those bugs were just going around), so I've had to lower my expectations somewhat.  On the plus side, I've been able to spend a quite a bit of time on the course, so I have a pretty good idea of the pace that I can comfortably do.

My goals are conservative, because I'm slow and still about 20 lbs heavier than I should be.  AG placement doesn't mean much to me because there are a bunch of crazy fast people in M35-39.  I'm hoping to finish in less than 6 hrs, but I'll be OK with anything under 6:30.  If I'm over 6:30, it means something really went wrong, which will be disappointing, but not the end of the world since this is my first one.  I'm really going to try to enjoy it no matter what my time looks like.

Good luck with yours.

4:34   my 3rd tri. My 1st was beginning of June last year and the HIM was beginning of Nov.
I don't think I was very well prepared eg 15k total swim yards in the precceding 3 months going into the race. Then again the swim was the equivalent of going over the edge of Niagra falls (gotta love that incoming tide at B2B).

5:36...was shooting for 5:30, so wasn't too far off.  Had been training for tri's for about 16 months at that point and it had been 10 months since my first sprint.  Had a prior history as a runner, though, and it showed in my run split (1:48) as compared to my mediocre bike time (3:04).

5:57. Goal time was 6 hours. I had been doing tris for 6 years. Pretty minimal training for this race. 6-8 swims in the preceding 6 months, maybe a dozen times on the bike. I had done a marathon about a month before the race, but even that was with mediocre training. Plus my feet were so badly blistered from the marathon I could barely run at all in between races. I raced at an easy effort throughout and never really pushed myself until the last mile of the run when I ran my fastest mile.

A decent time for your first 70.3 is simply whatever your time is.  Go in with a plan, realize it's probably gonna change (maybe a few times) during the race, enjoy yourself, learn from the experience, and sign up for another one if you liked it.

Decent is entirely individual.  A great time for me would be embarrassing to some of the people I train with.  Don't care and neither do they.  We're all out there to prove something to ourselves, not to somebody else.

I'll let you know Monday Morning! KS 70.3 here I come!

I'm shooting for a <45 min swim, <3 hr ride, <2 hr run. I think I can do this, but have told myself in the back of my mind that I would like to:

A) Finish the race
B) Finish in under 7 hrs
C) Finish in under 6 hrs
D) Don't die (though I actually think I'd like this to be either sub/pre A or A 1/2)

5:36 minutes. Door County HIM in 2008. Was a fairly hilly race.

This was my first season of triathlon, so less than a year of S/B/R together.

I started getting into cycling in 2007 though.

I looked at the Saveman race results from 2009.  There were not many finishing paces in the bike that started with a "2."  In fact, out of 219 men, it appears the average pace was under 15 mph.

Oh.. the point is, take the course into consideration when setting your goals.

My only 70.3 finish time was 6:15. I was shooting for under 6, but it was a trail run and I tripped and fell and had to walk for awhile after that.

My run was short, 20km and my bike was long, 60 miles. That was what was advertised.

I was training for 2 years before doing it.
