Subject: First real brick
I have my first ever triathlon two weeks from today, so I thought I'd try my first bike/run brick.

The race I'm doing is a sprint with a 1/4 mile swim, a 14 mile ride and a 4 mile run, so I did a brick similar to the last two distances.

Rode 15.5 miles and then did a 4 mile run. Total time was 1 hr 9 minutes. 23.5 mph on the ride and 7:28 mile pace on the run.

I ran a half marathon this past Sunday and my legs were fine after being a bit sore for the first part of the week. After completing the brick my quads were a little sore. I'm hoping to go about 1 mph faster on the bike and bring the run time down to around a 7:15, as the race is at 7:00 AM - I did the brick around 11:00, and it was around 80 degrees by that point. The course is supposedly pretty flat.

The swim is my weak point, and I'm hoping for somewhere around a 6:50 for the swim portion. I'm planning on doing some transition practice over the next few weeks. I'm not sure if I should try shoes clipped in for T1 or wait until I have a few races under my belt to try that.

I'm really looking forward to my first tri, and hoping to place well in my age group (30-34).

Congrats on the first Brick and not feeling the usual "I can't seem to bend my legs or get them to work for the first 1/2 mile".  With your speeds you quote, you will place fairly decently, if not near the top, of your AG so good luck and have a blast.

As far as clipped in our out for T-1, for what it's worth, I would recommend to not to try that in your first few races until you've had plenty of time to practice.  The time savings vs penalty for not being efficient/unsafe, is not worth in.  Again in my opinion.
I still put socks on and bike shoes in T-1.  In fact, this mornings race, my T-1 time was < 20 seconds behind the AG winner and OA winner so work on efficient T-1's before worrying about flying mounts/shoes clipped, etc.

Have fun.

Thanks for the tips! I'm also thinking of putting socks on at T1 - just so I don't have to deal with any blister issues that could crop up. Over the summer I'll experiment with riding and running sockless.
