I guess my point is that it's REAL easy to finish your goal if your stationary bike says you're going 30 mph, and I don't think I buy the argument that everyone already factored in trainer miles and stuff to choose their goals. After all, several people mentioned that they will need to go indoors because of UNFORESEEN weather conditions. And in any case switching to more realistic measurements certainly "challenges" you more. I don't know what the issues with trainers were before, but I would certainly take issue with this type of mile inflation.

Are you saying that if people are behind in their goals, they "may" choose to go do stationary bike miles to achieve their goals to "catch up"????  That is a completely different integrity issue.

but remember....people are setting their own goals.  What is the difference from using what you call "inflated" mileage or someone having lower goals (sandbagging) just to ensure that they make their goals for the sake of winning?  Guess we have to put some trust in the participants and play on the honor system.  This isn't a contest to see who can do more mileage than someone else.....this is to see who can set and obtain their goals....which hopefully will be a challenge to achieve.

You guys must have some interesting stationary bikes. I can barely crack 15mph on mine on the lowest setting. (Maybe it's just that I suck )

I set my own goals each month, regardless of whether I take part in a challenge. This is the 3rd month I've set my cycling goal at 140 miles. I have yet to meet it, including occasional stationary & trainer usage. If I do meet it this month, it's because of the 3 2hour rides I have on my training plan, and not because of mile inflation for a trainer or stationary bike.

And by the way, my treadmill says I run 8 minute miles. I have never run 8 minute miles outside, and only ran 9 minute miles in one race, ever.

It's not like we're playing for keeps here. What's the big deal? Everyone sets their goals based on last month, right? I mean, seriously, what's to keep me from putting in a 75 mile ride on my log tomorrow (besides the fact that my husband would know darn well I couldn't keep my butt on my bike that long, and he looks at my logs )? We're working on the honour system for this whole thing, so who cares?

I think reasonable mileage readouts are fine but if anyone wants to use *unrealistic* mileage estimates from any type of machine, then they're not being completely honest. They could just as easily make up the numbers. We should just trust people to make a good faith effort to record what they've done, however it's predicted or calculated.
