My first HIM is in 3 weeks.  anything I can take/do to make sure I don't waste valuable time making a stop?  I haven't had problems in my training, but this morning had to go quite badly by the end of a 2 hour bike ride.

I plan on eating oatmeal and banana with water and gatorade an hour of start time.  Then, water/gatorade/gel packs and maybe a power bar over the race.  I have a super high metabolism and food/water goes through me very fast.

Any advice to make sure I avoid the port-a-jons during the race?

Embrace the port-a-john. It won't take that much time and it's much better than being in pain for hours holding your bladder.

Or you can be like some of these crazy people and let it rip on the bike. Me, I stopped at the port-a-john after the first bike loop on my HIM. Best race decision I ever made.

I try to make sure I pee in the lake/ocean at the end of the swim.  It seems to help me get at least through the bike though I generally end up stopping to hit the porta-potty either in T2 or early on in the run....

Unless you're planning to win, I see no problem with stopping at the portapotty.  A minute here and there won't make a big difference.  Good luck!

Now THAT is motivation for me to swim faster!

You need to do what works for you and you are comfortable with.

I too like Jenn try to pee at the end of the swim to go out on the bike as empty as possible. I do pee on my bike if I need to. Last HIM I stopped in port a potty and it took 35" so not a big deal time wise but all those folks I had passed last 5' I got to pass them again.

If you don't drink enough to avoid having to urinate you can get dehydrated which will negatively effect your race time wise more than having to stop for a quick pit stop. For me if I don't have to urinate by mile 56 in an IM I know I need to drink more.

I can pee when I run too usually before an aid station so I can dump water on me right I go. I don't think most men can go and run. I did an Ironman and on the run the port a potties were so gross as folks had been many types of sick in them, I opted to pee while I was running or walking. Geez but I didn't tell the guys I was walking with.

I think the OP means he/she doesn't want to have to stop to take a dump. I've heard of some folks trying to drink most of their calories the day or 2 before their race so they won't have to stop. I say just figure that time into you race plan. It's probably gonna happen. Just don't poop in your pants on the bike. Could someone please resurrect that thread? Funniest thing I've ever read!

Cut out or down the fiber out of your diet last 1.5 days before the race can help with less bulk in your digestive tract if that is your worry. I did it last IM and it was better than the year before.

If you've gotta go.. you gotta go.  Eat normal and try to evacuate the morning of and hope for the best.  Personally I'd want to hit the john during a transition so as not to impact my bike/run leg times.
