Subject: Question concerning "getting HR up" before swim start
I've heard a few triathletes reference warming up as "getting their HR up", prior to the swim start.

Maybe a dumb question, to some....but what is the purpose of this?  I can understand warming up (for any athletic activity).  But, I'm not familiar with the purpose of getting the HR up as a focus.

Thanks,

jeff

Jeff, I feel like crap if I just "go". I need to elevate my heart rate to race conditions. In a triathlon, I elevate my hr by cycling or running first.

Here is a quote: "It will shock your system if you are standing around for 10 minutes before the race with a HR of 70, and then start the race running at 160+. Try to have the HR around 120-130 for the start so it is an easy transition up to racing HR. " from http://www.multisports.com/news/1042476717.shtml

I'm not a physio-geek, but it makes sense to me to get the heart rate up for the swim (versus run or bike) because it's the start of the race (nerves!), and the water itself can be a shock if cold, big mass-start, etc... Getting your heart rate up early helps your body deal with those stressors without dramatic spikes.  Just helps prevent that panicky, heart-racing feeling.

Hopefully, that makes sense.  After you get some race experience under your belt, I don't feel it's as important (unless the water is freezing!)

Cheers, Chris

You could always have some last minute instructions from the RD telling you that they messed up and only gave you one number, which you have to wear on the front (when you've tied it on the back on your top sitting in transition ) and have to leg it there to fix it before the race starts :p
That should elevate your HR

from a physiological perspective, it is important even as a well trained athlete to not crank up your HR too quickly- it's like trying to ram a 3"peg into 5" hole. Your heart is instantaneously ready to pump out the large blood volume requested of it but your systemic circulation system doesn't respond/expand as quickly.

One of the common experiences of rookie triathletes is spiking their HR and hyperventilating at the start of the swim to the point where they can't get it back under control (I speak from experience). This can be caused by not warming up adequately, going out too fast, or a combination of the two.  The result can be lot of dog-paddling, or worse DNFing.

I've always been a slow warmer-upper and I try to spend a lot of time in the water warming up before a race - I'm usually one of the last people out of the water prior to the start.  It not only helps to get my heart rate and breathing going, but also gets me used to the water temperature.  At my race this past Saturday, I swam out about 100M to the first buoy a couple of times to both to warm up and to also check my reference points for sighting.

You might be surprised how high your HR is right before a race, without much warm-up.  Those butterflies take a lot of oxygen, I think!
