I average 20 miles of running a week and have run several marathons. Long run these days is 8-10 miles. I'd like to at least keep up that base and add training for the other disciplines. Assuming I can find a pool, that is. Does it make sense for me to still run 4-5 times a week and add the others around the running? Any suggestions? I am a total newbie--last and only triathalon was to celebrate my 30th, 16 years ago.

Thanks for any advice.

i would say to cut back on running to 2-3X week to allow time to develope your other events.  i am sure u can add in biking (until u find a pool...ymca, school, university, public).  i try to keep base building easy - no more than 10%a week, plus one rest week/month.

what distance do u want to do?

Sprint or Olympic. Since the season is almost over, will try one summer of '04.

ok, to see where u have to be next year, just double the sprint program on the site. and before your final 13 week program leading up to your tri, make sure u have built up to the 1st few weeks of training so the transition is seamless.  with your marathon backround i see 'ironman' in your future!

With the running base that you have, I think that you are well on your way to the olympic and like Ron said an Ironman may be lurking around the corner for you. Good luck!

Thanks, all. Off to find a pool, pump up the tires and look at that training schedule. Again, thanks for the encouragement.

Similar topic. I just finihsed my first sprint triathlon (1:31) and loved it!! I am also a runner and planning to try my first Marathon in Oct of 2004. How do I keep 25-30 miles/week (or more as the real training for the Marathon starts) while training for the next sprint triathlon in Sept 2004 (or who knows, I may want to tri Olympic distance). My goal for the Marathon is to finish, but the goal for the sprint triathlon is to improve PR. Are these two events too close togeher?

Any advice will be appreciated.

Subject: interesting question yoshiko

my thoughts would be to train for both.  doing better on your swimming should not interfere with your marathon program...u just need to make sure your body gets the fuel/rest it needs.  biking...hmmmm,  well first, let me say that u will definitely beat your pr next sept on the swim and run - while doing the marathon program.  i would say, keep the biking to a minimum - at least once a week if your focus is on the marathon.  i think that u will find that u will automatically do better on the bike with the bare minimum.  we r talking a sprint here...biking shouldn't be a big deal on minimal effort.

olympic may be a little more difficult and a little much...play it by ear and see how u feel come early next year.

Thank you very much for your advice. Sounds good, especially the part, 'keep the biking to a minimum'. I don't enjoy biking as much as the other two events. I am looking forward to the next season!
