So I just picked up a set of Zipp 404's and I am very excited. I am just wondering how many of you with race wheels have a cassette dedicated to only your race wheels and how many just have your LBS pull your everyday cassette and put it on your race wheels?

I am looking to get a seperate cassette and my line of thinking is to not be too cheap on the cassette because it really should compliment my wheels instead of weighing them down.

Any thoughts?

Mike

I plan on getting a cassette tool and swapping it myself as it's not that difficult. And, chains and cassettes wear into each other so, if you get a cassette for the race wheels, I'd also get a chain. I know it's a pain in the arse but once they start wearing, a mismatched chain/cassette will give you some freaky shifting!

BTW:
CONGRATS on the wheels!

5 cassetees. tailor them for the course, legs, and gear spacing.

I agree -- I ride a Shimano 11/23 10 speed cassette right now and all3sports has a 11/23 9 speed dura ace cassette in stock right now. With the same high/low gearing, even though it has one less cog, wouldn't I just need to adjust my derailer?

Zakk,

Are you serious or just kidding around?

If you're serious, do you use separate chains? If not, how often do you put a new chain on?

If you have 10 speed shifters, you are probably going to have some shifting issues with a 9 speed cassette. The spacing between the gears is slightly different. I would just get a 10 speed cassette.

I am having trouble finding a Dura Ace 10 speed cassette in any size right now. If I go with a different cassette than what I already have on my bike, I will have to go with a 9 speed.

2 chains, and yes I'm serious. Used a 12-27 at wild flower, 12-25 at Uvas, a 12-23 at SJIT and I'll probably use that at 1/2 Vineman too.

I'm getting a 11-21 for Crits, since I stick to flat ones.

I decided to go with the 9 speed cassette and I will break down and pony up for the new chain as well. Thanks for the help gearheads.

I have heard from a friend who owns a bike shop that 10 speed cassettes are really hard to come by...who knows why

I can't find a 10 speed cassette anywhere right now -- and I have looked. I really want a Dura Ace cassette and would go to an Ultegra, but I can't find either right now. It might be the wrong time of the season to pick one up. Spring may be better as logically that would be when manufacturers amp up production on their components.

I have three sets of back wheels and 3 different casettes>

1. Training Wheel with a 12/26 SRAM
2. CompuTrainer Wheel with a 11/21 Ultegra (makes those 7%+ grades even more fun!)
3. Race Wheel (Nimble Crosswind) with Ultegra 12/27 (I've raced hilly courses)

They are all 9 speed and I have a 9 speed SRAM chain.
I use an old rear wheel on the CompuTrainer because it eats tires. I rather leave my road tires for the road and not wear them out on the trainer.

I find that there is a little adjusting needed for my race wheel so that the chain works smoothly and does not "automagic" change gears on me.

I have a cassette tool and have found changing them super easy, just keep the casette index lined up. They only go on one way and if you let them get away from you it will takes a bit more time to put them back on.
