I drink, prefer Victory Golden Monkey! Don't know about a recovery drink but at hundreds of miles per week as long as you get up and put in your workouts I dont' think it matters much. I mean you are burning thousands of calories per day with swim bike run....so enjoy a few!

morey000 - 2010-06-25 9:13 PM I'm not asking if it's as good as Endurox.  (although it sure as hell tastes better!)

but, is it an OK way to get some simple carbs into your system?

Damn- somebody commission a study on this!

there has been a study, albeit very small, that showed beer hydrated better than water due to the minerals/carbs in the beer.  Obviously you can't have enough alcohol to trigger the diuretic effect, but one or two after your ride should not be the cause of your cramping.

Do on raceday what is done in training....Sam Adams seasonal brew

Alcohol is a depressant and a dehydrater on a cellular level but chilled it will cool your core.

A beer or two, (or equal amount wine/liquor) is going to be about neutral. It's not enough alcohol to effect your body negatively but not enough simple sugars to be an effective recovery drink. There are antioxidants in most beers / wine though, so there is some (small) saving grace.

That said, it's common knowledge to bodybuilders that Arnold used to drink a pitcher of beer with his hot wings post workout basically daily. (seriously)

However, Arnold had the help on Winny and Dyna too :/

Also, dehydration can be an issue and I don't think we have to go into negative effects of binge drinking.

Moderation is key.

Let me just say that beer is wonderful. But, alcohol inhibits the production of
ADH or AHD (Its been some years since college and the degree I never used). This slows/stops the absorbtion of water through the kidneys. That's one of the reasons that you pee so much when you "break the seal". Stay below that level (whatever that level is) and you can stay hydrated. Go beyond it and you are heading for dehydration. Some of you scientists/doctors out there check my work and correct me if I said it wrong.

Having said that, I got off my bike yesterday from an 85 miler in the TX heat, had 2 huge glasses of water and then cracked a beer. Cheers.

I have no opinion whether or not it is good for recovery, BUT! If you want beer to taste as good as its gonna get, go out on a super hot day and get yourself REALLY parched, then when you get home, pop open a beer as the first post workout liquids. I did this once and I never knew how good a beer could taste.

Other folks have mentioned Guiness. Do a google search on the nutrients in Guiness. Its actually one of the healthiest beers out there in terms of vitamins.

I heart beer.

There was a brand new study just conducted which found beer, taken immediately after a workout, considerably refreshed the user, as well as alleviated minor aches and pains, making it a top notch recovery drink.

Granted, the study's sample size was small, and consisted solely of me. And only Newcastle Nut Brown Ale was tested, so obviously more study is necessary.

in regards to the above; Coors Light is a lot like making love in a canoe.  (F&^%ing close to water)

But here is the answer that I got from my friend who's a triathlete and a registered dietician with a master's degree in Nutrition.   Not what I wanted to hear, but this is her opinion.

"... it depends on how badly you need to rehydrate and/or replenish glycogen stores b/c it interferes with both and if your muscles are sore.

Alcohol is a diuretic, so makes achieving euhydration more challenging. It blocks glycogen storage, so if you've gone a long and/or hard ride, it'll reduce the amount of carbohydrate you have available for your next workout. It increases swelling around soft tissue injuries, so if you tweaked anything, stay away! It also lowers testosterone therefore reducing muscle protein synthesis. It is true that alcohol is a vasodilator--but it is a peripheral vasodilator, so it takes blood/nutrients away from the recovering muscles.

Certainly not performance enhancing, but one beer with the guys...you're probably ok...."

Here's a study comparing glycogen replenishment.  It shows that there was a slight difference after 8 hours in the ones who drank alcohol (but it wasn't statistically significant, probably due to the small trial size), but after 24 hours, there was no difference in the effects.

also of note, the dose of alcohol used was 1.5g/kg of body weight, for me that would be 105 grams, which I believe is considered a binge, or close to 8 13.7g/drink alcoholic beverages.

I volunteer to help you with testing...  I have three batches of homebrew, two just ready (Vienna Lager and Canadian Ale) and another ready in 4 weeks (Dark Honey Wheat)...

there is a certain appeal to going out with the guys you've just rode with and having a beer afterwards.

I've been researching this area closely for a number of years (albeit with a very small sample size) and I feel that beer is not detrimental, and is immensely satisfying after a long ride/big workout.
