View Member's Race Log
Utica, NY
United States

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 15m 45s
Overall Rank = 2328/9417
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 296/813
Pre-race routine:

stayed at Mike's BIL house in Syracuse. Up at 4:40, out the door at 5, had a banana and a bagel en route. Stopped for coffee at 6, had a Clif bar.
Event warmup:

light .5 mile jog. Lines at the portajohns were so long, I just made it into my groups corral 1 minute before the gun. Well, before the Revolutionary war era cannon.
Run
  • 1h 15m 40s
  • 9.3 miles
  • 08m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

I didn't push real hard because I was saving my best for the tri next week. At no time was I feeling like I was going hard at all. Pretty much RPE 6-7 the whole way. I ended up running an 8:08 pace which makes me feel much better after the Keuka Lake debacle.

My right hip was bothering me beforehand but was fine on the course. What surprised me was the cramp in my left quad at mile 8 that lasted the rest of the race. Very painful at times.

About 20 feet from the finish line a kid (early 20's?) who was about 5 feet in front of me just stopped and squatted with his head between his knees. I had to instantly decide to try to go around or leapfrog over him. I went around and almost fell in the process. He may have had really poor judgement, or he may have become very ill very suddenly, I don't know. I did see EMS people heading in his direction.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was a fun race for me, not a goal race.
Post race
Warm down:

Long-ish walk to the post race party. Got swag, beverages, food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of distance training, cramp in left quad, crowded field

Event comments:

This is the largest 15K in the world and a total blast. Running it is like being in a parade. Neighborhoods compete for the title of most supportive. There are bands all along the route, tons of people cheering you on, 13(!) water stations with ice, people with hoses out, DJ's, a guy on stilts, clowns etc... Lots of fun, incredibly well organized. The elite field here is world class, Olympic medalists race here. The Top 10 are almost always Kenyans.

Performance: Average
(watch time, official times aren't up yet) I treated this as a training run for next week, so I went by my HR. I wanted to keep it in the high 160's, low 170's. The first half avg'd 167, the second avg'd 174. I didn't take mile splits on the watch as I forgot to turn off the auto split function and I didn't want to mess with it on such a crowded course. There were splits given every mile and at 5k and 10k. The first 4 miles I was at a constant 8:30 pace. At 10k, I was at 49 minutes and change. I didn't pay much attention besides those numbers.
Course: Through Utica, NY. Downtown through some neighborhoods and a park. 2 substantial hills. Otherwise pretty flat. Mix of sun and shade.

Wow! Pretty fast for a "training run." Good race, sounds like a real fun event.

Congrats!!!  That's a great pace for that race.

I'm from Utica.  I was born up the street from the brewery, right near the finish line.  Haven't been able to run the Boilermaker for a while and miss it.

It's Utica's proudest moment.  I haven't experienced anything like the crowds at the Boilermaker.

We must have finished right near each other, my watch time was 1:15:43, I think my gun time was around 1:17:30.  Good Job.  The race is a blast, this was my 9th consectutive time
