Had my first bike crash ever during my ride this morning.  Lost some skin, but nothing broken.  Is there anything I should look for on my bike to make sure it is still safe to ride?  One of my brake hoods is bent, but besides that everything looks OK.  I was able to ride the bike home.

thanks!

Glad you're okay.

I can't say much about your bike...you should take it to the LBS to have it checked.

About you...did you hit your head?  If your helmet hit the ground, you may want to replace it.  It's mostly made of foam, and you won't see if the foam inside is cracked...thus negating it's ability to protect you if you crash again.

Did you see a doctor?  I crashed about a month ago, and didn't see a doctor because I knew nothing was broken and it was pretty much just road rash.  Turns out though that I have a strained shoulder and need PT as I don't have full range of motion in my shoulder.

Is your bike carbon, AL or steel??  If its carbon tiny scratches could do in your entire frame.  Otherwise if it ain't bent keep riding.

Didn't hit my head.  my hands, hip and elbow took the brunt of the fall.

It's an aluminum frame with carbon forks

Glad to hear you're OK! I'm pretty new to cycling and haven't had a real "crash" . . . yet . . .  I've only worried about hurting myslef in a crash, never considered I might hurt the bike as well. Good info to file away for inevitable future use!

I had a pretty bad crash about a month ago that left me with several stitches in my chin, a bruised jaw, a concussion, and some pretty nasty road rash when I wiped out on a wet day. Once I was able to ride my bike home after walking it for about 20 minutes i didnt seem to notice any issues with my bike. However, the next time I rode it I did think it felt a little funny. I couldnt tell if it was psychological or not, but I had ended up cracking the aluminum crank arm and I also bent the deraileur hanger. I mention this because the first few minutes of your next ride you may want to take a little easy just to double check that everything is ok before you start rocketing off. Glad you're ok!!

You may want to double-check the carbon forks.  I ?h?a?v?e? ?h?e?a?r?d? ?t?h?a?t? ?e?v?e?n? ?v?e?r?y? ?m?i?n?o?r? ??damage can lead to? sudden ?structural failure (at least that is what the sticker on my ?carbon ?forks says)??.?

Get some tegaderm for that road rash! It works awesome and you won't be stuck to your clothes or bed in the morning.

http://www.staples.com/Nexcare-Tegaderm/product_595575?cm_mmc=GoogleBase-_-Shopping-_-Assorted_Products%3EWound_Care_Products-_-595575-H1624

It was initally designed for burned people if memory serves.

x2...tegraderm or similar products are awesome.  Expensive...but worth every penny when even the non-stick bandages get stuck to your road rash.

If your helmet hit the ground, you may want to replace it.  you WILL want to replace it.

Fixed that for you.

I was drafting off someone, looked down for a split second to reach for my waterbottle and hit a rock in the road.

You do want to check for damage on any bike you ride and crash.

The assertion that "tiny scratches" can do in a carbon frame is just flat out wrong, though.  The fracture toughness of carbon composites is actually quite good (and tiny scratches wouldn't even get to the carbon).

Crashed! Supposed to have been going on a 3 hr ride, but came over the handlebars within the 1st 2 miles. Going down a steep hill, I was really cranking down trying to accelerate to see how fast the new bike could go. I vividly remember looking at my speedometer as it went from 35, 36, 37, 22! I thought 37 to 22 that can't be good. Right then the front wheel got really loose, and I basically had no steering or front brake. God was obviously in charge as I managed to steer by leaning across the opposite lane (no traffic), into the grass (between two trees and over a slight curb), I saw a cluster of three utilitiy boxes and still going over 20+, I thought uh-oh there goes the new bike, but again with God's grace I managed to avoid them and hit an uphill section (still grass) where I came over the handlebars and landed rather softly on the grass. Shaking more because I thought I'd killed my bike within the first week, I managed to fix a few minor things (like tightening the loose front tire!) and ride it back to the house for a more thorough check. Readjusted a few things, and headed out again: much more slowly. I have a few bruises, mostly to the ego, but I was really blessed: could have been much worse for me and my bike. The ride was kind of fated for failure however, when later I went over a hard bump and my water bottle came off, hit and somehow locked up the rear brake mechanism. Decided at that point to head back to the house, lick my wounds, and try again another day.  Still got in 27 miles though, so it wasn't a total wash.

I was going to post a similar question as well.  My brakes were messed up, but otherwise the bike (carbon) "appears" okay.

Time for a good LBS instead of doing the work yourself it sounds like.

Glad to hear you are ok!  I would still replace your helmet and get some tegaderm to take care of the road rash.  Check out the carbon fork and all the welds.  If you're concerned, take it to the LBS.

Thanks for all the feedback
