Looking for Good BEginner Race for 2011-Tucson Area

The Tucson tri series is it. Only the July swim is hectic with the serpentine in the pool. The March and October races are laps in the pool. The Sahuarita race is in the creepy green pond. Other than that, you'll have to go to the PHX area.

Thanks for the info on these. What is the weather like usually for these tri's? I know Tucson has 2 temps: Hot and Hotter, but I am only really familiar with Flagstaff (where I went to school). How bad is the bike section since I may rent a bike to do the race, and my friend will probably use a mountain bike? Are wetsuits needed? Thanks for all of the help (again)

I live in Sierra Vista and have done both races.  The elevation here is about 4600 so we tend to be about 10 degrees cooler than Tucson.  Both races are in pools so no worries about wetsuits.  Steelhead is in an unheated outdoor pool and can be cool, but not really cold.  Hummingbird is in the indoor city pool that is always around 82 degree.  Both bike rides have a few small rollers, but I would consider them easy.  Steelhead is this weekend, and registration was full at then end of last week.  Hummingbird will be in August and I haven't seen anything about signing up yet.  As said earlier, both are small races.  You will see lots of first-timers, and plenty of mountain bikes.

The RD got the housing community to postpone the green dye this year and even had the water checked.  it wasn't green at all, tasted fresh and clean- and was a true pleasure to swim in.  I'd recommend the Sahuarita Lake Tri to anyone as a first Tri.  It's well run, well organized and the scenery is even nicer than you'd expect.
