Just signed up for the JFK50 - my first one.  It's about 17 weeks away and I'm in training for it.  My question is...I don't necesarily want to give up everything else entirely.  I want to swim easy/short one day, ride maybe 30 on the trainer one day and do one long bike ride a week.  Do you think this is way too much to do while training for the 50?

I guess as I get tired I can easily just back off the other stuff.  What do you folks think?

That sounds reasonable.

How many days a week are you running? If it's 5 or 6 you could probably do away with a recovery day and substitute an easy bike.
The long bike might be hard to fit in if you're doing a long run Saturday and Sunday.

If you plan well you can make it work.

Thanks. I plan on running 5 days a week, with my long runs being Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday.  I was trying to schedule a medium run on Friday and long runs on Saturday but someone had informed me that I should reverse that?  I was going to build the Friday run up to 10-15 followed by the Saturday run up to 30-35.  I was trying to keep Sunday morning open for the long rides.

Option 1:

Monday - swim or off
Tues - run 6 building to 10/easy 30 on the bike
Wed - run 5 building to 15 or so
Thursday - run 6 building to 10
Friday - off
Saturday - long run building to 30-35
Sunday - long bike  possibly 6 miles in the evening building to 15

Option 2:

Monday - off or swim
Tues - run 6 building to 10
Wed - run 5 building to 15
Thursday - easy 30 on the bike
Friday - 6 building to 15
Saturday - long building to 30-35
Sunday  - long bike

????? Any thoughts?

You definitely want to do your long run first followed by a medium run the next day. The second run gets your body used to running on tired legs without trashing you too much.
What do you consider a long bike? You could even break some of the mid week runs into "2 a days" as long as you get the distance in.
A friend of mine followed this program and has had fantastic results in endurance and speed.

That's a lot of information there. Thank you.

My long bike is somewhere between 50-70ish, always hopefully with lots of hills :-)   I ride with a group of people and it's the only opportunity to do so - that's why I want to keep it in.  There are ways I can shorten it if it gets to be too much, though.

Ok.  I will keep that run after the long run in place - I guess I can run long on Saturday and then bike on Sunday and run nice and slow later in the day on Sunday.  I'm used to doing double workouts - not so much double - runs.

Thanks for your help :-)

For me biking does not help me run faster, although may help me run farther. I have seen some people who somehow manage to succeed in running while not training running very much at all, who knows how they do it.

You look to be maxing out at about 70 miles per week. To me that sounds like solid training if you can consistently pull that out for a couple months before your taper. I looked at your logs, I don't see a lot of high volume weeks in the past month. Be careful as it appears you will be more than doubling your weekly mileage rather quickly.

yeah, I'm trying to be careful with the run increase.  I think my highest month was May (before my 1/IM) at about 100 miles per month.  I'm trying to increase slowly and listen to my body.

I guess getting a few rides in here and there aren't going to hurt me. I can easily just eliminate them if it becomes a problem.

The other thing you might consider is breaking up your long Saturday run into 2 long runs. During some of my training, I have never run more than 24 miles, but put in 30+ in a day. That second run is definitely interesting. I have also doubled up on long runs; 22 Sat, 20 on Sunday. I didn't do that on every weekend, but I was also tri training and not ultra run specific training.

Good luck

Balance is the key for everything
