Subject: Swim training in tri shorts?
I am gonna start my swim training within the month and am wondering if I should use my tri shorts to excersise in.  I already run, and bike with them, but is it looked down upon by public pools to walk in wearing them instead of a reagular swim suit?   Please help me figure this out. ]

Thanks

Swimming in them is fine, except that chlorine (and I've found even "salt" pools have some similar chemicals, and frankly, the ocean is not much good either) will ruin your tri shorts quickly. Much better to invest in a pair of Speedo-style swimming trunks or jammers (similar to tri shorts but no pad) made out of POLYESTER (because chlorine and other swimming environments also eat Lycra/Spandex).

I wear mine, and I love them.   I swim at a public college pool and most of the guys wear speedos, so I don't feel out of place at all.

As Yanti says, get polyester or PBT for swimming.

If you have lycra or spandex in your swimming outfit, it'll go transparent in 3-6 months depending on frequency of swims you do.

Get a poly suit and make sure you like it because it'll last years.

I wear my tri shorts every day at the gym pool, I see plenty of other guys doing that too.  Now as far as the pool ruining them, so far mine have been holding up pretty well.  I make sure that when I get out of the pool and hit the showers, that I rinse them inside and out with the shower water, then ring them out.

Get some polyester or PBT Jammers like Yanti and Dan said. Sure you can swim in tri shorts but they will get ruined in time from chemicals. If you do some google searching you can find jammers for under $20 which is far less than a nice pair of tri shorts cost.

+1 on "Yes you can wear them" and you shouldnt feel embarassed. The serious swimmers will understand (and be wearing them too) and who cares what the ignorant/non-serious swimmers think anyway?

However, I also agree on the polyester solution. Its cheaper. They last forever. And they also provide a bit of drag to enhance the workout. I find that if I use my trishorts for a speed set, I feel so much faster and smoother without pulling a parachute behind me. Its a nice feeling on race day!

Chemicals do tend to eat up Tri Shorts.
Jammers tend to be thin with no support for your junk...it's a show when you step out of the water.
I used Pearl Izumi and the chemicals ate away at the front and back causing a see-thru effect.
DeSoto has double panels on the front and back...even with some eating away, they are not see-thru in critical areas.

IMO...DeSoto wins!

i agree with most of the posts. Get a pair of jammers. My nice tri shorts are See through after only a few months. So now I just use them for a few workout before race day and wear a pair of Jammers on the ride and sturdier shorts for the bike.

I got a pair of TYR polyester jammers this year for the pool and they seem to be holding up very well.  They aren't quite as "slick" as the lycra ones I used to wear, but then I don't swim fast enough to notice any difference.

The polyester material may last forever, but the stitching doesn’t. How do I know?  My polyester jammers suffered a “catastrophic failure”. The butt seam split (ahem) sometime during a swim. This was years ago and I probably did somewhere between 5 and 75 flip turns flashing anyone unfortunate enough to notice.
