Subject: building up heat endurance?
i know others have been complaining about the heat lately, and boy do i relate. today i went for my regular 6 mile run with the girls in the jogging stroller...in 90 degree heat, 50% humidity. i had to stop and walk more than a few times because i thought i was going to pass out. i had electrolite mix and water with me and drank almost all of both (not to mention squirting myself with the water a couple of times...although i was already quite drenched from sweat).

so, here is my question - since i doubt i'll ever race in 90 degree weather, is there any point in training in it? is there any benifit to building up a tolerance to training in the heat, or am i just making myself miserable for no reason?

one good thing about this run - i tested out my new team singlet and tri shorts, and they work great! managed to get a couple honks and a few double takes too...although maybe they just liked the bright yellow double jogger (speaking of which, would it be wrong of me to change the big ironman logo on the stroller to say ironMOM??? hee hee).

Here's my 2 cents.

If I can run in 35 degree heat then when it's 27.... thats easy, I've done this when it's been 8 degrees hotter.

I'm not sure about the physiology behind exercise in the heat.

Iw ill train in sub zero weather. Bring on a measly 80 degrees and 100% humidity and I become a whiny little cupcake! I need to force myself, starting next week, to switch my bike and run times. Bike in the morning, run at night. I am awful pathetic about it tho.

Unfortunately, high temp and humidity are everyday facts of life in my area of the country. So training in this sort of condition becomes a necessity because ultimately you willl race in the same. But on the upside, I don't have to put up with the blinding snow storms, ice, and frozen pipes during the winter months. Guess we all have our challenges to face....

Congratulations on the honks and whistles from your new gear. I got a "wooo wooo" while biking the other day and it made my afternoon.

that's me too. i don't mind the cold...and it isn't so much the heat, as the humidity (spoken like a true midwesterner).

let me just say, you do not look 41 (not that i know what 41 should look like). from your photo i would have pegged you for late 20s early 30s.

I do think training in the heat makes you better at racing in heat. Whether is physiological or psychological, I dunno. But you may be right. I would bet beyond a certain temp and humidty, the cost outweighs the benefit when you won't be racing in high temps.

I also think that training in the heat and humidity makes you better at it. I can't speak for the physiology behind it, but I think it makes you better at controlling your pace to avoid blowing up on race day.

A couple of weeks ago, I ran for an hour, concentrated on not blowing up, and came home and checked the weather cuz it was one hell of a hard run. 73% humidity! No wonder my sunglasses fogged up when I left the house.
