I was heading home from work when I saw a cycler on the side of the road hitchhiking. I turn around to go see if I can help and he has a flat and a broken pump and no cell service in that area.
So i offer to give him a lift. We load the bike in the trunk and head up the hill. Long and short of it is we chatted and he too has done tri's in the past even a full Iron and now mostly commutes to/from work and does a few centuries throughout the year.
So I take him all the way to a bike store on the other side of the hill that I live on
(about 30mins out of my way
) we go into the bike store and he buys me a $50 gift certificate. Says it was the least he could do for me going out of my way and he was very very appreciative. I said thank you and my son and I spent some time looking around the store and just chatting it up with him and the bike store folks.
Well I am getting ready to head out, told the bike store folks I would be back to spend my gift certificate and all that when the guy I picked up tells me there is something else he wants to do for me since he can tell I'm a good guy
(I guess I fooled him, hahaha
).
Anyway he has a Guru Tri bike hanging in his garage that is just collecting dust that he wants to loan me for a while to use for my next few races and all that. I thought he was just being polite and did not really think it would happen, but on Sat. we arranged to meet at the store and he brought out the bike. WOW, I can't believe it. It is a few years old, but so is the road bike I have been riding.
This thing looks KILLER and rides pretty good on the short little ride I took Sun. morning.
So just goes to show you that one good deed can mean a lot to someone.
I am very thankful and a bit overwhelmed that I now have this custom made tri bike just for giving the guy a ride.
What a great sport I have involved myself in!!!!
