This is really just a gripe -

I was doing an easy 14 mile ride this morning around 5:15 to the pool and then swim and ride hard back.  I was comming back going 21 mph down a major road in the aero position in my subdivision when a guy on a cruser shot out in front of me from a side street.  No lights on, no warning, I was able to get my had to my rear break and locked it up and missed him.  He just waved and rode up on the sidewalk and kept going.

Holy crap, he did know how close he came to having 209 lbs at 21 mph up his *ss.

Everyone is fine and I do not have a flat spot on my tire.  I am just venting.  I feel better, thanks.

That sucks, glad you were able to avoid the collision. I often see people cruising along on the wrong side of the road... makes me wonder what they're thinkin.

They're not thinking and that's a major problem for their health. I feel like too many people learn to ride as kids (good) but are not taught road rules properly and treat bikes like toys (bad). That guy was just riding like he did when he was kid, most likely.

I think that a lot of people (both on bikes and in cars) don't realize how fast a someone can be going on a tri bike and it throws their time & distance sense out of wack.

I don't have a tri bike, but if I did I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be riding aero in a subdivision with side streets.  That's just asking for trouble!

Attention spans like this are what makes most path rides dangerous. Usually you get rid of most of it on the street.
  1. I'm walking with my friend.... look something shiny to my side. I'll turn 90 degrees to look at it with no warning. I'm sure it's fine.
  2. I have my dog. 20 feet of leash out to work out just fine. My dog is smart
  3. Riding my bike cruising along... I think I'll start to go crooked NOW.
Cars are looking better all the time, arent' they?

That's a great set Matt.  I'll add this one and bet folks have more they can add as well.

(4) Walkers two abreast on the trail.  Does that yellow line in the middle of trail mean anything?

x2.

If I'm riding in a subdivision type road that is not very busy...I take up the whole lane and move to the right only when a car comes up from behind.  The reason being is that most people that drive in these areas are on auto pilot when they drive.  I'm guilty of this as well when I drive in my neighborhood.  It's also the reason why most car accidents happen within 5 minutes of your house or office.  We get lazy as drivers when driving in an area very familiar to us and don't pay as much attention to what's going on...like a triathlete on a razor thin bike tucked in aero position that's making absolutely zero noise.

Couldn't agree more. I've been cut off by a few cars pulling out who waved to me after the fact, realizing that I was going to slam into the side of their cars. My personal favorite is going through a 25 mph zone, faster than the limit on the bike and people still cross the double yellows to pass..... I really wonder about people sometimes.

Glad to hear the OP avoided that.

Serves you right, lead foot.  :-)

Since this was just a rant, i think it's ok to hijak a little - I had the same thing happen on the Army post where I work.  I was doing 25-26 in a 20 mph zone and the car passed me...only to be pulled over 5 seconds later.  Cops on any military posts are super anal about speeders, FYI.  I was actually a little nervous he was gonna pull me over too.  About a week later, while passing through the gate on my bike, the guard told me to stay heads up because they had gotten complaints about bikers speeding...I sort of hope this was because of me.

When I lived in the States, I saw that kind of stuff every day and it was just ridiculous ... the upside, as a bike commuter, is that I learned to get really, really good at bike handling. However, I wouldn't ride aero on roads. Too many crazy people.

Here in Indonesia ... well ... I've just started to wave, myself, at THAT GUY. Yeah, that one on the motorcycle with no helmet and no lights on at night, smoking AND texting, coming at me on the WRONG side of the road. Best just to wave ... if I ring my bell or yell, he gets startled and drives even more directly into my path, oncoming.

I see that guy every time I ride at night.

If I rode during the day (sometimes I have to) ... it's worse.

If I ever get a speeding ticket on my bike, I'm not going to fight it. I'M GOING TO FRAME IT!

In my house, that guy is usually referred to as a future organ donor.  But wait, you said he's texting and smoking?  I wonder how people driving cars can do that...he wouldn't hear the bell or yell, because of the iPod earphones he's wearing Surprised

A lot of the people in Japan, on and off base, ride on the wrong side of the road.  I can be cruising along and have one lazily turn a corner right into my path and I have to be the one to go into the middle of the street to avoid them even though it is there fault.  I almost got smacked by a Porche the other day because of that, luckily I only got buzzed, probably to the point I could've grabbed the coffee out of his cupholder.

I also have a hill that I routinely cruise down at 50kmph (marked 30kmph) and I take up the whole lane because it has a lot of turns.  I have cars that try to pass me in the opposite lane...

What are you considering to be the "wrong side"?  Last time I was in Japan they still drove on the left - I assume it's the same on base?

I know I about got myself killed several times in the UK trying to drive on the left.  Mostly at intersections, where you forget and follow your natural instincts or habits and end up on the wrong side of the road.
