gonnafinish plscheer - 2010-08-03 1:13 PM I'm coming from up north to do my first race in PA (moving from Boston to NYC)
I will be solidly in the back finishing the run cause I have run maybe 9 miles in the last month ...having some real impact-issues with my knees

That's the problem I've been having for a couple months.  I've been reading about running barefoot and also Vibram Five Finger shoes (not sure if I'll try either of those) but I am walking around barefoot more to help build foot muscles, tendons and running around the yard barefoot as well.  This was an interesting video to watch on barefoot running.  I watched his strike intently and try to copy it when I run.  I've been out a few times the past week with no pain that I did not have before the run started.  I'm not saying his strike is what helped it may have also been the time off from running significant amounts as well.  But, it is different from how I was running.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jrnj-7YKZE

For what it's worth, I used to have a lot of pain after I ran (mostly heels and arches, not knees) - I switched to running mostly on trails vs. paved surfaces and all that went away. No more ice, no more pain walking barefoot, no more limping thru the office on run days or any of that despite more running miles than in past years. My runs are usually more interesting too due to the varied terrain and scenery.

Good luck and have fun to all who are racing at Steelman. Nockamixon is a nice place to race; I'm sure the closed road makes for an awesome bike ride. I would be there too but am at the shore with the family that weekend.

I'm a definite athena and I've been doing Chi Running for the past 3 months and it's been going really well.  I HIGHLY recommend Chi Running by Danny Dreyer --book at Barnes and Nobles for abt $20 and worth every penny.  I was inactive due to knee injuries past 2.5 years and started jogging 3 months ago and I only have minimal pain.  And no shin pain!  I also recommend not running on back to back days if you have knee pain.  I also like to take cold water soaks with Epsom salts after a race or hard day.

I've been running with Nike Free's and modified gait similar to Chi running. Knee pain gone. Able to run much longer distances.

Ran the course tonight.....again
Felt the water it was warm!

I noticed the bike route has changed, all summer long I have been riding out of the marina and making the second right and taking that out to 563. The race packet says the course has changed you don't make the right but make a sharp right and ride aprox 1.2 miles through the park to the main enterance. I rode this in my car tonight and it seemed long and looked decently hilly. Does anyone know why the change and has anyone taken this route how bad is it? I know the lower section just out of the marina is rough but like I said I have been turning right.

I also saw the change in the bike course. Apparently the park has a new policy that Harrisburg School Road (which I think is not an actual park road) cannot be used for any events. The Doylestown Duathlon this spring had the same issue and had to do a last minute course change. I emailed the RD and he said he would be marking the bike turn arounds on Saturday AM. I may do a course ride around noon to check it out. The extra 1.2 mi through the park is definitely not ideal, there are a lot of bumps (which were somewhat fixed by the Dtown Du RD) and some rolling hills, definitely not as fast as the old route. That said it'll be the same for everyone! From what I read it sounds like he shortened the East turn around....would be nice if he took that long downhill and immediate uphill on the west side out!!

I think I'm bib 61.

I'm totally with you on taking out the long hill right after the turn around on the west side --it killed me!  Granted I'm new to triathlons but I really don't like having to turn around at the bottom of a long hill.  I've biked the new route and it's not too bad.  I really don't like Harrisburg Rd coming back in because it has divots and tire ruts so I'm glad it's cut out.  Anybody want to bring balloons or pick a place to meet up on Sat?

Yes that hill right after the 2nd turn around (West) is not fun, it kills me everytime.
I think I might head over there tonight to ride the marina to park office and back just to get a feel.

I agree about the Harrisburgh School Rd coming back in last week I stood up to stretch just as I hit a divot/bump and almost took what would have been a nasty spill.

3 days! Getting very anxious

I'm doing the swim part of a sprint relay team (I'm injured, so can't run or bike this year)-- my teammates are both tri-newbies. We're #1189. I did the OWS there last month and it was too warm for wetsuits then. Last year I did the Oly and despite rain for the swim and most of the bike, it was a lot of fun. The wrinkle for the bike is that you have to go down a decent hill and turn around at the bottom and go back up it. The main part of the bike ride is on a really nice surface.

Will most people be going to the 3 pm meeting on Saturday?  Maybe right after that, to put some names to faces, we could meet up at the exit from the bike corral?

Good news on the updates this morning!  The water temp was 78!

Per USAT rules: Each age group participant shall be permitted to wear a wetsuit without penalty in any event sanctioned by USA Triathlon up to and including a water temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit. When the water temperature is greater than 78 degrees but less than 84 degrees Fahrenheit, age group participants may wear a wetsuit at their own discretion, provided, however that participants who wears a wetsuit within such temperature range shall not be eligible for prizes or awards. Above 84 degrees, wetsuits are prohibited.

So let's hope that the water temp is 78 or below and everyone can wear wetsuits.

I would actually prefer the water to be warm enough that no one wears one.  I think it is too warm even in the mid 70's to wear mine, and then I will be (further) disadvantaged if others are wearing them!

Clydes = "Clydesdale" - a special racing division for male athletes > 200 lbs (at least that's the definition for most races....). The female equivalent, for female athletes > 150 lbs is "Athena".

I could do that!  I plan on being there for the meeting.  I thought about bringing my bike and riding around the course a bit, but I think I'm going to pass just because I'm sure there will be a lot of extra car and foot traffic around.

Just got my wetsuit. Tried it on at home - do not seem to be able to breathe in it )

I'll be at the pickup early. Not sure if I see anybody tomorrow. Whatever idea you come up with for the race day meet-and-greet, I'm in

I'll be picking up my packet on race day - so I won't see anyone today.... Any ideas/plans for a Sunday meet-up?
