I've been coming to Kauai for the last 12 years, but never shipped my bike.  I was thinking of trying to rent a road bike for two weeks.  Any ideas of a good place to do that?  Also would love some insight into the best places to bike 30-60 miles without getting into all the typical Kauai traffic.....we stay on Poipu....thanks!

I have no idea, but I eloped there and it is the most beautiful place on earth. We stayed at the hyatt in poipu.

anahola was pretty traffic-bare. also, maybe in the north near the napali coast. and i am a stickler for routine, so i would ship my bike.

While I didn't elope, we went there on our honeymoon....love it! I know you're right on shipping my bike.  I have the case, but I'm guessing it will be beaucoup bucks via Fed Ex.  Won't ship airlines...I've seen what happens to bikes that way and no insurance.

Depending on how long you stay, and how many days you plan to ride, you might consider buying a walmart bike then donating it.

I know I saw a local craigslist posting recently about someone who bought a $200 walmart road bike and left it chained to a pole.  He posted the combination on craigslist and said if it's still there...it's yours.

Reason being is that he rode for over a week...and a rental for that long would have cost more than $200.  Not sure about leaving it chained to a pole...but donating it to the salvation army or a church might get you a tax writeoff.
