I figured it is the best thing to do so i don't wear out my nice road tires, but i need to get a cassette. How do i know which cassette to get?  All i know is i have shimano 105 components.  I'd like to keep the same ratio's as my current setup. Also, isn't it bad to put a brand new cassette on a used chain??

BTW i have a Javelin Sizzano.

Go to a bike shop and ask for a Shimano 105 cassette.  A 12-25 or 11-23 is fine.  I would find out what your current cassette is, get something different so you have some options on hand.

That beign said, I don't think there's a need to have a separate tire for the trainer.  I use my expensive PowerTap wheel on my trainer so that I can use my power meter and there doesnt' seem to be any downside other than the annoyance of switching tires every time.  Other than convenience, save your money for a race wheel that you can use on race day!

Well its really hot in texas and life can easily get in the way, so the only times i can bike is really early in the morning or a 2 hour window at night.  Changing a tire once or twice a week will be very annoying..... I wanted to get a trainer mainly to have the option of getting a workout in mid day, or at night.  Figured a spare wheel would be the easiest way to do it.

Personnaly I have a bike only for my trainer and a Cervelo P2 for my race and my outdoor training. It's better when it rain I can train on my trainer and if the weather is good I can go outside for my training.

I had the same dilemma about a year ago and mentioned it to a road bike friend of mine. A few days later he came through with a spare wheel, tire and cassette for me to "borrow" free of charge. It is great having the extra wheel and it sure made me faster at swapping out the rear wheel.

Believe me, I know about the heat.  I think a trainer is a great idea!  Mine gets a lot of use...

But is chaning a tire really that much of an annoyance?  You'd really rather spend money on a new wheel and cassette than spend 2-3 minutes to change a tire?  A spare wheel/bike is definitely the easiest and most convenient option, but if you are at all worried about money, changing a tire a few times a week shouldn't even make you think twice!

Cassette doesn't matter with a trainer, really.  I'd get one that compliments what you have.  If you have an 11-28 get an 11-23 in case you do a flat race.  Where to get cheap cassettes?  I've had good luck with the classifieds here and on Slowtwitch.  Just make sure you get what matches your bike - 9 or 10 speed.  Cheap wheel?  Wait until Nashbar has a sale (rolls around pretty quick) and get their cheapest wheel - under $100.

Most of us end up with a POS wheel just for use on the trainer. It's a lot easier to switch out the wheel completely than it is to change the tire and risk a pinch flat.

Don't sweat your gearing 11-23, 12-25, whatever. The gearing on a trainer doesn't matter near as much as outside. 105, Ultegra, or Dura-Ace. Keep your eyes peeled on the classified here and on slowtwitch. Regularly someone's getting rid of a cassette for not a whole lot of money. Pay attention to your chain and switch it out when it's over .75" on the chain stretch meter and you don't have to worry about old chain, new gears.

Ask your LBS if they have a rear wheel they'll let go for cheap. I ended up with a wheel, rim tape and an 11-23 cassette for about $60. The wheel couldn't be trued so it was not something you'd want to take outside but worked fine on the trainer.

My bike is 10 speed 105 so I bought a cheap 10 speed rear wheel on an ebay equivalent and then put a tactix trainer tyre on it.

Cost me about $150 all up and take me about 10 seconds to change wheels rather than the 5 mins to change the tyres over.

It's a really good investment.

Funkyd04...

I've read a few of your posts lately and it's all about buying more gear. Remember it's training that makes you faster, not all the flash gear!

Just went through the same thing....I do most of my weekday rides on the trainer and have quite the selection of Spinervals DVDs (which I would highly recommend).  I went to my local LBS and they hooked me up with one of their old roadie wheels and I ended up by a new cassette.  I think I got everything for a little under $100 (wheel, cassette, tube, install)  already had the trainer tire.

Works great to be able to switch them out as needed......one thing I would recommend is getting a second wheel magnet for your computer...its kind of a pain in the butt to switch that and make sure it is setup properly plus a magnet is like $4....other than that I would say go for it.

Maybe it is just me but why not just get a good tire? I use Gatorskins for my training wheels and use the same tire all year long for the trainer and the outside...

Then when it is a new season I just buy a new tire for front and back.

Put a white sheet behind your trainer, on the floor. After you've ridden 50 miles or so take a look at the sheet.

I now have a spare wheel but no cassette and was going to get one, but now I just keep the armidillos on all the time (trainer, road) then switch to prorace3s/latex tubes for any races. A good tough road tire will be fine on a trainer, and way cheaper too.

I have done that and have never had a issue with a trainer shredding a tire... Maybe I am lucky, maybe it is good tires, who knows but I have rode the trainer for up to 3 hours before and never had little pieces of tire on the wall, carpet, paper or whatever...
