In my local sprint last week, I was cruising along on the bike on a modest downhill grade, maybe going 24mph.  I was having a good ride (wound up just within the top 10%) and had not been passed by anyone other than the race director on a motorcycle.  I hear sort of a strange noise behind me and figured it was a car . . . until a rider just blasted past me . . . as if I was jogging . . . maybe even walking - or standing still.  The race was a time trial swim start, and I was about 8 minutes behind the first swimmer.  He lapped me (with an 8 minute lead) when I was about 2 miles into a 5-mile loop.   I think Reeven is a junior in high school and probably hasn't yet reached his full potential - watch out when he does:

300 yd swim; 10 mile bike; 5K (that was a little long) -

I read it as a Junior in High School. It's a great time, but at that age elite runners are in the 13-14 range on a track.

Too funny... After reading the story, my eyes went straight to the run split...  I agree with Bryan; 18:32 is unimpressive.

The kid certainly had a good race, and I'm not trying to rain on his parade, but the kid needs better race discipline to bring that 5K down by several minutes.

Cheers, Chris

You read right (junior in high school) and I agree with you, it's the run that jumps out the most as a "weekness" . . . I'm just sayin', he finished pretty darned quickly and that's with some gains left to achieve on the run (I guess it's an open question as to how much he can improve).  In any case, certainly fun to watch.

I sure wouldn't mind running that "unimpressive" 5K time.

I think that 'unimpressive' was meant more along the lines if one would really consider this kid/guy potential good enough to develop into something much better. Considering that, then yes, 18:32 5K is not that impressive.

I don't think it was meant to diminish anyone's racing time. Remember your fast will always be someone's slow and vice versa. Nothing to be taken personal, that's just the nature of the sport.

27.6 mph average for a 10 mile TT isn't bad at all. Good swim too. Transitions are right in there. Won't need elite runner speed to do well, but he does need to pick up at least a couple minutes in that 5K to stay "tri" elite. As a jr in high school, though, one would just hope he can maintain interest long enough to see his full potential.

Meh... I don't think you can read a whole lot into that run split one way or the other.  I've seen guys with 5k PR's in the low 15's put up lackluster run splits in sprint tris before.  Especially if they're inexperienced trying to run hard off the bike.  Or just so far off the front coming out of T2 that they know they don't have to kill themselves to get the W.

Plus, being that this is a triathlon we're talking about here, God only knows what the actual distances were.

The fact that he finished first out of 300+ people at age 17 as well as put up the #1 swim and bike splits clearly indicates some potential.

As a Senior in high school, this is kinda depressing.. my first tri time, and only tri time, was a whole hour longer than his.

Bummer.

Good for him though, sets a good example.

Considering the fact you have another 9 years to peak I wouldn't worry too much about it

In this sport success is measured in years not months.
