Subject: Marathon training run & sprint tri

I am doing a sprint this upcoming Sunday.  I am also training for a November marathon and my training plan calls for about 12 miles on the same weekend.  The marathon is actually more important to me than the tri.

I don't want to do a long run the day before the event, but I'd like to fit it in if possible.  Should I do it on Friday?  Monday?  Skip it?

Any suggestions will be appreciated.  Thanks.

Just throwing out my 2 cents.....

If you do the run on Friday, will your legs feel ok by Sunday? (only you know this answer)

If you do the run on Saturday, your legs will probably be sore for the sprint which will make for a miserable experience at the tri.

If you hold off to Monday, how sore will your legs be for the run?

I know you probaly have thought about all of this, but sometimes it helps to see it in black and white.

If it were me, I find that the day after a sprint (the few that I have ever done) my legs felt great, so I would run on Monday.

Good luck with your decision.

Im in a similar situation, except my marathon is in Oct. For me a long run this fri is definatly out, so I am going to get up extra early on Thurs and do it that day. Recovery jog on Fri and take off Sat. Sprint tri on Sunday. I don't know if this helps any, but those are my plans.

Do the run portion of the sprint race four times.

I have also been in that same situation and will be again in September.  I moved my long runs on Wednesday early morning.  This allows plenty of time to recover.  Unfortunately, a lot of people can't do their long runs in the middle of the week.  It just works out well for me.  Your marathon training sounds important to you so I would try to fit it in earlier so you have time to recover for your tri on Sunday.  Good luck.

I've been doing this juggling act myself recently.  This is my first season of Tri's which I'm going to end with a 1/2 iron event which is my "A" race for the season.  However I have a couple of sprint tri's in the middle of all of this as training races.  I don't want to compromise my 1/2 iron training at all, but at the same time I wanted to have a good race in the sprints and try and guage myself against the rest of the pack and my age group.  I've found that as long as I have a complete rest day the day before the sprint that I can train pretty hard right up until that point without any trouble.  My first sprint tri was a couple of weeks ago.  On the thursday prior I did a 56 mile bike / 3 mile run brick, and then a 13 mile run the next day on the Friday.  I took Saturday off, and then raced the sprint on Sunday.  I placed 22/214 which just barely made the top ten percent of the field.  So I was pretty happy with that.  I think really it all comes down to how quickly your body recovers.  I think the more you do to speed that process (stretching, ice, compression, massage, etc...etc...) the stronger you will be on raceday.

So if I were you I would consider doing the 12 miler on Friday morning (giving yourself the max amount of recovery time).  If you're really worried about it affecting your race then bump the 12 miler to Monday and do it at a more relaxed recovery pace.  I would not recommend skipping it.

Have a great race and enjoy your marathon training!

Having done 14 of those suckers, I can honestly say that come November you will not miss this 12-miler if you skip it. Get it in or don't, just don't stress over it either way.

I agree with Bear. One run, even the long run, won't make or break you. Total weekly mileage, week in and week out, are what lead to success or failure.

I'm trying to figure out my training right now for a sprint, a half marathon and a Ragnar that I have coming up in Oct/Nov. Not easy!

I'd probably just run on Monday or maybe get some extra miles in after the race on Sunday. I also think you'd be fine with skipping it all together. Good luck!
