Subject: -20s/100m with wetsuit?
Hi folks,

I did my first Oly yesterday.  Great experience - I've done one sprint a month ago and enjoyed the longer distance.  Next race up is an Oly in 5 weeks.

I got a brand new wetsuit - Xterra Vortex 3 and this race was the first time I wore it (3rd OWS ever).  I swam 1:40/100m for a time of ~25:00 over 1500m.

THE PROBLEM:  a month ago I did an OWS race, 1500m in 33:00.  In the pool, recently, I generally do 1500m in about 30min, or 2:00/100m.  Would this wetsuit really make such a difference as to shave 20sec/100m?

Theories:
1) The course was measured short.  However, i was FOP in the swim (14/162 out of the water) this race.  In my sprint/other OLY swim (on a team) I was bang on in the MOP, so regardless if the swim was short, I significantly improved in my OA standing.
2) My pool swims are abysmal - I don't do flip turns and am quite slow (but not 20sec slow) at turning at the end of my lengths
3) I have incredibly bad form which the wetsuit drastically improves - and actually have a stronger stroke (for me) than I thought.

Theories?  I guess I'll always find out in 5 weeks if I bang out another performance (or not) like this.

Thanks!

Yes, it can make that much of a difference.

BUT, for OWS, take measurement with a grain of salt roughly the size of Montana. It's 1500-ish meters. That's just the way it is. Next year the exact same course might be measured and end up being 200 meters longer than it was this year. Don't sweat it.

I would guess its a combo of short course and the wetsuit.

I doubt a wetsuit alone could make that much difference at your speed.  I could see it making a 20 second difference for slower swimmer however.

Wetsuits can make a huge difference.  I grew up swimming in a pool and didn't put a wetsuit on until a few years ago.  I was definitely a purest and said things like"I don't need no stinkin wetsuit".

A friend of mine convinced me to try one out.  I tested it in the pool (25y).  First I did a hundred from a push...good strong effort...no wetsuit.  I went a :59.

Then I tried it on (BlueSeventy Sprint)  I went a :54.  First time ever wearing it!

I know this was not too scientific, but I have to tell you...that's a huge difference.
