Subject: Running in water during the swim.....

I'm somewhat new to the triathlon realm and just had a question.....
In the swim portion(open water) is it ok to run through the water as long as you able to touch?
Is this frowned upon?
In my mose recent triathlon, half of the swim the water was no deeper than 4ft and many people were just running......
I wasn't sure what the right thing to do here is........

Sure, good luck on having a fast swim time though...

It's legal.

It's also slower than swimming (esp. in 4' of water), so I don't know why people would do it.

(Well, I guess I do, but don't really want to start yet another thread about preparation for the swim...)

First tri was this past weekend. One of the many tips I learned on here was swimming till your hands hit the sand. Many competitors started running " trying to run" once it was shallow enough to run. I gained a lot of time by just swimming right by them till it was too shallow to swim. It also saves a lot of energy by doing this. Think of running in the water at the beach, how tired were you? It makes a huge difference running in a foot of water over 4 feet of water.

Yes you can, but it is better to keep swimming until your hands hit the ground or if the water is below your knees.

My sentiments exactly (almost).

My first tri was in a pool where part of the course was in water that was barely knee deep.  Everyone ran through that part of it.

Just like golf......there's no room on the scorecard for an explanation.  Do it the best way for you, and don't worry about it.  You get no style points by doing it a certain way.  They don't ask "how"....they ask "how many".

As "an" example......a co-worker told me of a tri he recently did.  There was a guy there who reportedly swam a <1:00/100 breastroke....and swam it the entire course.  Can you imagine ---- "Yeah...I'm faster swimming breastroke, but the crawl is much cooler"???

There's also a member of this forum who did jump-dives for an entire pool tri, once.  He'd practiced it to see if he was faster swimming it or doing it that way.

Do whatever you feel comfortable doing.....and good luck.

I did a tri a few weeks ago where I was stuck in the middle of the pack and everybody stopped to run, so I had to as well. I tore my feet to shreds on the rocks and I was slower than I hoped. I will try not to run again.

In general ..yes you can do it (why though?). HOWEVER, I believe that an RD can explicitly prohibit forward propulsion using the bottom if he/she so chooses. Never seen it, but be aware of that.

Also agree that most people stand up and run/walk too quickly. I go until my elbow touches the bottom, as my forearm is about the length from my foot to my knee. Just think of this: the thing that stops your forward progression in the water is DRAG. Are you more fluid dynamic walking vertically or floating horizontally? exactly. And if anyone's "A" plan is to "walk the swim", they should question what they are doing out there!

I would consider whether or not the work effort was really worth it.  That would be exhausting and wear on your legs.  In the few tri's I have done, I had to use my legs a lot after the swim.  I could be doing something wrong though.. Laughing

Tri Indy (Oly-Indianapolis) is USAT sanctioned & officiated with an urban swim in a canal.  Walking/running is specifically prohibited, although that may have been for safety.  Where you could touch bottom was rough with lots of sharp bricks/rocks.

I did a tri last year where the last few 100's were walkable. I just kept on swimming until I was no longer going faster than the walkers, then I also got up and ran.

Since the world record for ONE 100m race is just under a minute, I'm going with BS.

It's somewhere +/- 52sec (world record).

I'm repeating what I was told.  What if it was 1:00?  I really won't lose any sleep over whether it trips your BS meter, or not.

BTW...who said meters?  Did I say meters?

In the end......the point was a pretty simple concept.  Do what you want.

Your point is fine.  Just no reason to throw out a bogus story to support it.  Be wary of what people claim.

So you've basically called me a liar....and now my story (I admitted I'm only repeating) IS "bogus"?

Classy, Derek.

BTW...I just checked....

With the exception of ONE AG......the masters swim records in MY STATE are all under 1:00.
