Subject: body marking the day before the race?
I'm gearing up for my first HIM in a month (IM 70.3 Branson), and I just got an e-mail describing the schedule of events. The race is on Sunday, Sep. 19th and I see that bike check in and body marking are listed on the 18th. Is body marking often done the day before the race?

Interesting. Never heard of it but that does make sense in the "make sure the magic marker is dry before putting on sunscreen theory.

I've heard of bike check in and body marking the day before, but typically they'll have body marking both days.  I'd be surprised if they didn't.  I did IM 70.3 Augusta last year, and even though they had body marking the day before, they still had it the next morning.

To be safe, just bring a permanent marker of your own.

I got body marked the day before my last race.  I'd not do it again unless I had no choice.  I had my numbers on my calf and upside down on my hamstring.  All my friends ended up in the same situation.  It's not a big thing but I saw no advantage to it and ended up with double markings to scrub off.

It's been offered at a couple races I've done.  When it's with a Sharpie, it's not easy not to have to redo it on race morning.  At IM St George, they were doing temporary tattoo type airbrush stencil numbers--those worked out great, even from 2 1/2 days before the race.

Maybe I'll take some gauze and medical tape as well as my own marker. 8^) I hate it when they bleed onto other skin.

I've always seen it offered as an OPTION, with day-of body marking offered as well.  This is my definite preference as body markings just don't last long on me for some reason - they'd be half-gone before I got to the race!

I have had it done at lots of races around here. Cuts down on the number of volunteer hours on race day.

had this done at a couple of races.  big events do this to limit the craziness on race day.  when you have a race with 2k people makes things easier.

personally i think its retarded.  I hate walking around with a race number all saturday but sometimes its got to be done.

They could be using Tri-Tats. Temporary tattos that are put on with a damp cloth and last for several days. I have seen some events use them, much neaterand don't rub off or wash off easily.
