Veteran 118 Somerset, PA | Subject: First tri bike, help me decide I'm in the market for my first tri bike and like many others funds are limited. After searching the web I've come up with my two choices a Cervelo P1 or a Felt S32. Now I know that I should try to go to the LBS and try each but there are no LBS within about an hour and a half drive so I'm asking the forums collective wisdom for some guidance. |

Fit makes a huge difference. I believe these 2 bikes have very different geometries. Pay for a fit and see which one works best for you. If it's the Cervelo, pay the extra $300. It'll be worth it. Either bike is a solid choice though so you won't be wrong with whichever bike fits you best. |

Carbon fiber is worth it. Cervelo seems to be the it brand in Tri bikes right now but the arn't always the best deal. |

Get a fit. - The bikes you list have very different fit characteristics. 2. Search used. You will get much more for your money. John |

Veteran 273 Downingtown, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: First tri bike, help me decide I would be careful sizing tri bikes the same as road bikes. My road bike is a 54cm. I was toying with the idea of buying a leftover Felt S22 that was also 54cm. It was obviously too big for me... (as in not just a little too big... WAY too big) |

Veteran 118 Somerset, PA | Subject: RE: First tri bike, help me decide I'm starting to get the feeling from everybody that I really need to get fit to the bike before purchasing it. I have to admit that the last thing I want to do is spend $1,600+ and then regret it evertime I throw my leg over it. The bummer is I've only found one LBS in south western PA that is both a Cervelo and Felt dealer. Looks like I maybe taking the kids for a road trip. Peter |

Peter There is a different geometry to the P1/P2 and the P3/P4. Felt is slightly different too. Point is, between the bikes in the Felt/Cervelo there should be something that fits you. As one of the other posters above said too, don't be afraid to spend a little extra money for a Felt B16 or the P2. It's late in the season now. If you have to save for a few months so you can get one of those early next season that would be well worth it IMO. |

Member 161 | Subject: RE: First tri bike, help me decide I am lucky with multiple good local bike shops I pass on a regular basis. But even if I didn't have one, I could not imagine spending over $1000 on a bike without making sure if fit properly. Heck my first mountain bike was less than $500(initially) but I spent about 2 hours trying different bikes and such. Drive for a couple of hours and check it out, it's better than spending $1600 on a clothes rack. |

Veteran 297 Kansas | Subject: RE: First tri bike, help me decide I am riding the 2010 Felt S32 and have been very happy with it. I rode a 54cm road bike and as the others mentioned, rode and tri sizing are different, as after my bike fitting, the 52cm tri was the correct size for me. My shop is a Cervelo dealer as well, and I tested both. Can't agree more with the others, bikes were very different and it was pretty much a personal choice made by feel. Other person of same dimensions could come in and gravitate more towards the Cervelo. Your body will tell you which is the right one. Worth the rode trip if necessary. Good luck. |

Point is, between the bikes in the Felt/Cervelo there should be something that fits you. I went to a Cervelo e'ride and was put on a 51 P3. I really wanted to try a P1, and it is more likely in my price range, but they don't bring out the cheaper bikes for the demo. I was sized as a 54cm before that, so at least I learned what size Cervelo would fit, but perhaps I wouldn't be ideally fit on a 51 if I got a P1. I hope that when I'm finally able to buy a bike that I can try it on first instead of guessing and paying for shipping before I even find out. Right now I'm drooling a bit over the pics and specs of the 2011 Felt B16. Sounds pretty nice, and I digthe color scheme too. Fit fit fit. Don't buy if you can't be sure! Could be expensive and even painful otherwise. -eric |

Member 39 Buffalo Grove | Subject: RE: First tri bike, help me decide Felt is not making the S32 for 2011. They will be rolling out a new S22 but not sure the components yet. They have not shipped any of them yet and not sure when they will begin doing that. I would check around to see if you can still find a 2010 S32 at a LBS. You should be able to get a good deal on one now. |

Veteran 118 Somerset, PA | Subject: RE: First tri bike, help me decide Well I spent the last few days looking for and at bikes and today I purchased a 2010 Felt B14. The LBS I was at had it at the same price as the Cervelo P1. The bike is an absolute bullet to ride. The only bad part is that I'm not picking it up until Wednesday. They need to cut the bars down a bit and then we'll do the final fine tuning. Ride report to follow. Thanks to all for the advice, Peter |
