Subject: numbness in hand during/after cycling

I have been experiencing numbness in my left hand (mainly the pinky/ring/middle fingers and the part of the hand associated with that side) after cycling. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions? I use a mountain bike and ride with most pressure placed on the proximal region of my metacarpals (hold hand at 90 degree angle to forarm - the bottom of the hand).

Thanks for your help!

google "cyclist's palsy"  it's pretty common, you need to change the way your hand hits the bars...  I ued to get it on my tri bike on long climbs, but not other times

Thank you for your help! I'm actually still experiencing some numbness now (the next day), so I definitely need to stop it from happening again.

Change hand position often, and how you sit, loosen your grip and keep your elbows flexed, wiggle your fingers occasionally to keep yourself loose.

Do you have too much weight on your hands?  You can move your weight back, off your hands slightly by raising the height of your bars in relation to your seat.  (Several ways to do this)

The fit of your bike could be off - have you been professionally fitted to it?

You might also consider some gel handgrips.  I'm not sure what's available off hand - look around.

I installed Fizik gel inserts under the tape on my road bike and it certainly helped.

Good luck.

Ditto on fitting. Seat too high, to much on an angle, leaning forward in an aero position and resting more on your forearms than the elbow? Cockpit (handlebars) too high (pressure on hands/arms).... I would say it is definitely a fitting issue and has to do with the seat angle/height and cockpit height/angle.

Check it out and you may begin to enjoy the rides again without the added pain!!

I had this problem and I ended up replacing the bullhorn handlebars on my tri bike with regular drop handlebars. I had way more options for hand placement, and less numbness as a result. I can't ride aero most of the time due to traffic, and the bullhorns just weren't working.

Not sure if you ride with a watch, HRM or Garmin on your wrist, but sometimes when my hands start tingling, I have to loosen the HRM because it's a tad too tight. Also try shaking out the hands if you can. New tape on bars, (if you have it) can help as well.

I did something similar, I was cycling at the gym with the crappy generic aero bars and dinged my ulnar nerve and was numb for like a week until the inflammation went down.
