Subject: winter training in Denver area?
I grew up in Denver but have spent my entire triathlon life in Houston.  I've got the opportunity to transfer back to Denver for work, which if I'm offered I will take, but I've signed up for a few Houston races where I'm really nervous about training for in Denver.  I won the lottery for the Houston Marathon (my first marathon, Jan 30), and I registered for the inaugural Ironman Texas (May 21).

I'm not very excited about training for either of these by myself, especially the marathon.  Most of the running/cycling groups websites in the Denver area seem to only go through October.  Are there running/cycling clubs that are active through the winter, or will I be doing my 20 mile runs by myself in December?  I will likely be moving to south Englewood, Highlands Ranch, Centennial, or Littleton.  Don't mind driving some, but would prefer to stay south of Denver.

Then of course there's getting used to the cold, running at elevation, having to do actual hils, buying cold-weather gear, not being acclimated for IMTX heat in May.  But I figure I'll worry about those details when the time comes.  Right now I'm stoked about being able to move back home AND have a job already in place.

Well this doesn't fit the south of Denver criteria but if you get desperate my group runs Saturdays year round.  I know a number of them were planning on training for the New Orleans marathon in February.  www.4allrunners.com

The Boulder Running Company in Greenwood Village sponsors group runs during the winter (at least they did around January-April when I tried running with them a few times). They definitely hit the hills pretty hard during their runs (I guess that's what happens when you're based on a hill).

The times I've run with them the main group is at about a 9 min/mi, but there are stragglers on both ends.

Runner's Edge offers training runs year round, http://runnersedgeoftherockies.com/jmain/index.php

Their group runs are mostly in the South metro area but go as far north as Boulder.

The Denver Running Meetup Group and the Denver Road Runners (both on meetup.com) continue their weekly runs all through winter... rain, shine, snow, hail... we are still out there.  A lot of us run more than the group advertises.  You can definitely find people willing to do 20+miles since both groups consist of both beginners as well as experienced ultra runners.

I think you will be surprised how often we get 40-45 sunny days all winter long that are ideal for training.  With a little flexibility there is rarely a week that you can't get out for some really nice training.  I think I rode my bike at least two weekends every month and I don't go out if it is going to stay below 40.

Look on the bright side-  training at altitude you'll be ready to shred the IM.  As for the heat, just train like the crazies train for badwater.

Funny, I was actually considering doing Bikram Yoga to acclimate to the heat.  Seems like it would be a good idea.

thanks for the advice everyone!  I should have my transfer offer this week and could be a CO resident again as early as mid-October.

Runner's Roost's runclubs continue through the winter. I go to the Colorado store on Wednesday's at 6pm. The Aurora/Parker store meets Sunday mornings, not exactly sure of the time though. If you are looking for a more casual run the Irish Snug n Colfax meets every Thursday and even on the coldest nights is still able to attract a couple of dozen runners.
Good Luck with your training!

Boulder Running Company DTC also does group runs, on Saturdays, and I think they go through the winter. Follow them on Facebook to get the updates...
