Subject: bike shoes during transitions?
Hi there! I'm doing my first tri this weekend ( columbus OH), and I realized this morning that I don't know what to do about my bike shoes during transitions. They are clipless, and not recessed, so they are tough to walk in, let alone running through transition. And the last time I tried preclipping them and puttin my feet in while riding ended up with a crash.

Am I going to be okay hobbling through transition, do you think?

Chris

I've run in bike shoes for transitions.  You just have to go slow and you'll be fine.  I am like you- I would like to have my shoes already clipped into my bike for the mount, but that would take me some practice.  I will say that leaving the shoes clipped in for the dismount is easier.  I don't wear socks on the bike, and then I unvelcro my shoes while riding and pull my feet out to pedal bare foot on top of the shoes.  Then I swing one leg over and balance on one pedal and hop off.  It's actually really easy to do and doesn't take long to learn.  Of course, I don't dismount this way gong really fast but it's still better than unclipping, coming to a complete stop and then hopping off.  Good luck!

Yeah, you'll be alright, I do it all the time with Sidi shoes and big ol' red Look cleats. Not the best situation, but doable. Maybe next year I'll invest in tri shoes to do the shoes-on-the-pedals transition, the Sidis just don't allow it.

I've also worn mine in transition..

My last race i was on the second to last rack away from the bike out so i had to run practically the entire transistion area in my shoes. IT wasn't too bad.. just don't try and make up too much time there.

like runnergirl said.. it is MUCH easier to dismount and leave the shoes clipped than to mount. Give it some practice. If your rack is close to the bike out then you won't need to worry about running much.

Do practice it though... I tried to do the dismount at my last tri and had one foot on top of one shoe.. and one foot in the other shoe that was un-velcroed.. luckilly when i tried to pull my foot out the shoe actually came unclipped.. otherwise I would have fallen right at the mouth of the t-area and could have taken out other a few other folks..

Good luck with it all.. just work on it lots before your tri and don't try and pull out anything new on race day.

I had the same concern for last weekend's race. What I realized is that with one hand on your handlebar stem and the other on your seat, you have quite a bit of stability to run in your biking shoes.

You're exactly right.  Also, after coming off the bike my legs are pretty tight and I know that I can't run fast -so speed isn't an issue for me in bike shoes.  I like to use the bike shoes as an excuse for my long T2 time..."my legs felt fine, my T2 time was long because I couldn't run fast in my bike shoes"

I also put on my biking shoes in the trans area and run out. I will usally past 2 or 3 people who have the shoes on the bike and they can't get them on. Even had one person fall in front of me. Keep it organizied and simple. I do put some vasaline in the shoe by the tongue so my feet slide in easier.

A technique I've developed over time to keep "balance" on the skids (aka bike shoes with cleats) is to use your bike as a "crutch" when your running into transition and place about 30% of your weight on your bike seat with your right hand.

At least it really helps me stay upright.
