Subject: To wash your feet or not to wash
Ok...bad timing since my first tri is this weekend and I should have made a decision by now, but I'm still waffling.  I have an OWS and need to run up the beach to the parking lot for T1.  I know my feet will be pretty sandy.  It's an Oly so I'll have a 40K bike and 10K run. It's my first tri and I don't have the gear or desire to bike/run without socks.  It also seems I should at least rinse my feet/wipe them quick before donning socks.  I see doing one of 3 things: 1. just towel wipe my feet to get as much sand off as possible, 2. quick rinse with a squirt bottle/towel wipe, or 3. quick shake/rinse in a little shoebox size tub I have full of water/towel dry.
Any thoughts on what actually works decently?  I worry slightly about my "shoebox" taking up too much room in the trans area
thanks!

Tubs went out with the '90's... Just wipe them off. You'll be fine.

Quick squirt with bottle, stand on towel.  I promise, this is best.

Bike sockless and run with socks.  I have never done anything to get sand off of my feet during a race and it has never bothered me.  Biking sockless allows for the sand to somewhat dry and fall off and if there is any left you have complelety forgotten about it when donning socks in T2.   Socks also go on alot faster in T2 when your feet are dry from the bike. This was my strategy during my recent HIM and I had no sand irritation and no time lost in transition.

I did an OLY earlier this year that didnt have tubs. I didnt have an extra water bottle to squirt with. I bike and run sockless. I didnt have pain during the race but after the endorphins wore off I examined my fet and I hate blisters and blood spots everywhere from the sand. It was painful to wear shoes for a few days post race. I second the extra squirt bottle while standing on towel. I have used it before with good quick success.

I was worried about this in my first race, but my coach assured me it would be fine.  He was right.

I just wipe my feet off quick on the grass or my towel in transition.

Would definitely not recommend this since OP specifically stated he has not practiced this way, nor has a desire to at this stage in the game... I've personally gotten some unexpected "hot spots" when I've practiced riding sockless. Everyone is different.

I've done everything.
I've done nothing, I've brought a water pan, I've squirted w/ bottle, I've rubbed my feet on my towel.
In some races with a particularly sandy run, I've wished I'd of had that water pan. In others, I've been able to sluff off the sand in a grassy area.

Best bet for me these days (fastest and most hassle-free) is to use the towel.

place a small bottle of baby powder next to your biking shoes , use the power and a small towel and wipe . i also put powder in the socks before the race starts. if your feet are a little wet , this will help putting them on..

Thanks all!  I really like the idea of the powder, towel, and wipe. I use baby powder alot during climbing and snowboarding...forgot about what a great drying agent it can be.  See ya lata tub!  I'll bring a small squirt bottle just in case, but really like the baby powder idea.

Just a quick wipe on the towel and go.  I never notice any of the stuff I don't get off - sand, grass, etc.  This is an opportunity for free speed.

This is exactly how I did it and it worked great. Although, this year I successfully ditched socks completely.

Yep.  Just like this.  Plus you got nice clean dry socks for the run.

I have had transitions in grass, sand, dirt, mud, rocks, concrete, etc... and never once has washing my feet been something I needed to do.

If there's sand, I wipe it off on my transition towel, but usually it's not an issue. I put my socks on in T1. Sand has never caused a problem, although I often find some in my socks later.
