Subject: HR Questions (yeah...still for dummies)
The more I play around with this, the more questions I have.  For the sake of this discussion, we'll assume I've done a field test, and my LTHR is accurate.

1.  For training purposes, does MHR mean anything?  Are people meaning to say LTHR when they say MHR?

2.  Let's say a person's LTHR is 175bpm.  Is there any "rule of thumb" (even a range) for what that person might be able to sustain for 2hrs (percentage?)?

I’ll give it a go. I think max heart rate is only good for figuring percentages of it to train at. Other that that I can’t see what it is good for.

As far as LTHR I posted a thread and wanted to know what percentage of LTHR people were doing there sprint tri at but got no response other than they go all out. That might be good for them but my sprint is going to be about 1:45 so I can't go all out. And I was looking for a percentage like you.

In Septembers issue of Triathlete there is a good short article on how far you can go on percentages of max heart rate. 50-60%= many days. 61-70%=many hours. 71-80%=2-7 hours. 81-85%=An Olympic tri. 86-90%=some can hold it for a sprint tri. 91-100%=the finish line.

So you could convert the percentage of max heart rate to where you LTHR is. My LTHR is about 154 which is about 90% max heart rate. I know I can hold that for about 1 hour which seems right according to the article. So to go for almost two hours I would have to stay at  81-85% max heart rate or 90-95% of LTHR.

So for you 175 LTHR x 90-95% for two hours that would be 157-166. I think this is just a range but it is the best I could come up with.
