Well, here it is, my first post. This looks as good a place as any to give a brief description of my road to triathlon:
My first race
(as an adult
) will be this Saturday - a sprint.
I'm 36 and come from a background of competitive swimming and cross country in HS. Back in the mid-80's I did a few triathlons with my dad. I was on the swimming and cc teams, and rode my bike everywhere b-4 driver's license, so not much training was necessary.
Fast forward nearly 20 years: I've done very little endurance-type work since HS. Weight training has been my near-exclusive exercise since college because it fits well with a busy life, full-time job, 2 active kids, etc.
Other interests....brewing beer. Love beer. Problem is this causes the waist size to slowly creep up over time. I was at 36 1/8" this January. For some reason I finally had enough. I started checking out tris, started talking it up one night over cards, and I soon had 3 fellow neighbor dads joining me on this quest, all in the 35-39 age group. All have trained well and are ready to go.
Why did I choose the Git-R-Done reference as my screen name? The other guys are all riding MTB's, and I'm on a circa '82 Schwinn Super LeTour with bolt-on aero bars. With my 20-something yo bike and my cotton t-shirt flapping in the breeze, I kinda feel like Larry the Cable Guy compared to all the jerseyed wanna-be European cyclists riding in my area. We'll definitely be on a "Blue-Collar Triathlon Tour" this weekend.
So, progess to date: down to 33" in the waist this morning, dropping 17-18 lbs since the beginning of the year, by following the BT 16-week sprint program fairly consistently.
Enough of my blah blah. Thanks for listening, and hopefully this will continue.
