I am doing a 35 mile group ride in the morning.  I haven't rode in cool weather before.

Here is the temps

8am 52
9am 57
10am 62
11am 67

Do I need to go and my some warmer stuff?

I'd probably do arm warmers and maybe a long fingered light glove over my regular gloves both of which can be tucked into a jersey pocket.  Maybe a vest.

Similar conditons to what I rode in this morning.

I wore the following and was comfortable the whole ride

Shortsleeve Tech shirt under short sleeve juersy
Arm warmers - Took off after first hour when the temp got above 60 degF
Knee Warmers - Also took off after the first hour
Full finger cycling gloves
Skull Cap under helmet.

arm and knee warmers are cheap and something you should have for fall/spring riding.

outside of that, at those temps, i'd either look to a vest or full sleeve full zipp jersey (or a base layer underneath but thats a lot harder to adjust if it gets hotter) .

Too late for the ride today, but at those temps I'd probably just go with normal gear.  Under 50, or if I swim first, I may use arm warmers, under 45 I go deeper into the closet.  But everyone is different obviously.

I rode this morning in Ohio (same temps) and just stuck a longsleeve technical shirt (from a race) under my jersey. I was fine.
It was cold for the first mile. Then I forgot about it. I was also wet from swimming first.

I prefer to be cold at the beginning, versus have a bunch of clothes with me that I can't ditch.

I thought about wearing my full-fingered gloves but decided against it. Glad I did. I was fine.

Wal-Mart long sleeved compression shirt. Toe covers. Thin running tights. Full du-rag Halo head band. Tri shorts under the running tights.

I did my first chilly ride of the season tonight with long sleeve compression shirt, tri shorts and was ok.  My feet on the other hand froze and i may need to invest in shoe covers since i cannot wear socks with my bike shoes.   I am racing the Montreal IM next weekend and have no idea how to pack for it.

Man, that sounds nice. I don't think it has gotten below 80 since early June here. You guys will be laughing out of the other side of your mouth in January when I am riding in shorts and a short sleeve jersy though.Laughing

oddly enough, the best piece of cold weather gear I have ever bought was a long sleeve under armor heat gear compression shirt.  It does a good job of cutting the wind, but it doesn't trap heat like a jacket.   That shirt under a thicker jersey and a set of arm warmers is all I need down into the low 40's, and I can comfortably ride up into the 60's by just pulling off the arm warmers.

for gloves, find a set of cross country skiing wind gloves.  They are super thin and do nothing but block the wind.  I wear a pair of those over my normal cycling gloves then ditch them when I warm up.  They are thin enough they fold up really tiny.  They are also a godsend on chilly rainy rides.

Once the weather gets chilly, make a note of what you wear and weather conditions in your blog so you can tell what works for you. Wind, temps and sun all make a 50 degree day feel different.

As it gets colder keeping wind off is key so having some windproof bike clothing that wicks is wonderful. I love Gore Bike Wear as certain fabrics they have are really wind proof. When I ride in the 20s I wear one of my Gore jackets as outer layer as it keeps wind off..plus some are waterproof.

At or just under 50 I wear tights or leg warmers if it will warm up, arm warmers, and a vest.

Good investment in leg or knee warmers, arm warmers, and get a vest...they can be removed or pushed down and take up little space in your back pocket of your jersey.

Nothing is worse than being cold while riding...chilly for 10-15' is okay but for hour or two not pleasant.

A good rule of thumb to remember: "if you are comfortable for the first few miles you are over dressed."
As you warm up you will be too warm, possibly sweaty which can be very bad in cold weather

The best piece of cold weather gear I have bought was my balaclava. It's too warm to wear above 20F, but below that temp it's a lifesaver.

I ride in the cold a lot and on days where it's in the 40s to start and then gets in the upper 50s later on.

I really like this shirt from Craft: http://www.probikekit.com/display.php?code=C2723
Their Pro Zero Extreme Windstopper, it has a windstopper material in the front and super light weight everywhere else. I'll wear this a a base a regular jersey, normal shorts, full gloves and wool socks to start out. If it's closer to the 30s to start I'll wear a cycling cap too. I hit my first climb about 5 miles in and find I shake off the cold after that climb.

As mentioned you want to start out a bit cold and as you build heat be comfortable. I find blocking the wind and cold from my core does that really well. I can then regulate temps a bit more by zipping my jersey up and down (only helps a tiny bit due to the Craft base layer). Having my arms exposed helps to shed heat later on and if needed I can pull the base layer off and tuck it away.

The old school newspaper under the front of the jersey works too.toss it someplace appropriate when you warm up
