Subject: FIRST TRI, NEED ADVICE...
Im running my first tri this Sunday July, 24. I feel mentally and phisically ready, but I have some questions about fuel for the race...

I plan to eat a bagel and/or pasta with oj in the morning prior to the race. I might sip on some gatorade after my warmup/stretch up to 15 minutes before the swim. At T1 I plan to chug about 10 oz of Gatorade High Endurance formula. I'll have water on my bike. During the latter part of the bike I want to try a Hammer Gel. Again at T2 I will chug some more Gatorade. On the run I will take water when needed...

The race should take no more then two hours in the hot florida sun...

Is this too much or too little? I know there is a happy medium...

Also im concerned because I am not known as an early riser or early to bedder, so I'll probably not sleep much the night before...

Thanks for the help...

Jamie

OJ can give me heartburn or some acid stomach.  Have to experiment to find out what's best for you.  Just don't experiment on Race Morning.   Not sure about chugging the gatorade.   Sipping might be better.   What type of race are you doing?

1) Don't "try" anything before, or during your race that you haven't had experience with. If you haven't tried a gel during your training, race day isn't the time to "try" a new nutritional supplement. Many an athlete has experienced intestinal issues because they took something on race day that they weren't used to.
2) If the race is under 2 hours total time, chances are you probably won't need anything other than water or sports drink. Solid food or a gel probably won't be needed for a race of that length. Assuming you have hydrated properly the days before the race and have eaten enough calories the morning of the race.
3) For me I found two bagels and two luna bars and some gatoraid before my first sprint was plenty. (Yes I'm a guy but Luna bars just taste soo good).

Kind of like bellinghamspence said, chugging the gatorade may not be a great idea, especially at T1. I know that I'm not usually up to chugging much of anything when I get out of the water, cause I've usually swallowed a fair amount of water during the swim, and drinking much more right off makes me feel kind of sick starting out on the bike. I would think that would be evern worse with ocean water. There is also the time lost drinking in T1 versus drinking it gradually while on the bike.

Given that it's a sprint, you shouldn't need a lot of calories, so what you describe sounds like plenty. I would even suggest ditching the hammer gel if you're already downing gatorade high endurance, and especially so if you've never used gel before. Just try to stay steadily hydrated.

As far as sleep goes, conventional wisdom would say that the night before doesn't matter so much (none of us sleep well the night before a race), it's the nights before that that really matter. So try to get a good night's sleep last night.

Good luck and have a ton of fun!

Very true what has been said.  Sleep 2 nights before your race is more important than the night before.  Its also very important to drink plenty of water in the days before so that you are starting out hydrated on race day.  And don't break the golden rule... if you think you might do it during the race, make sure try it out in advance.  Above all, have a great time and let us know how it goes!

I don't know where I heard it but I buy it, I don't mix gel and energy drink. It's either Gatorade *OR* Gel and water.

My advice is don't waste time chugging anything during transitions. Do your hydrating before the race, and during the bike ride. Though, an offroad race ads a new twist to being able to grab your drink. Anyway, yeah, put your Gatorade, or even diluted Gatorade on the bike and drink as much as you need before the run. I'd also advise not trying anything you haven't tried in training (ie: gels). I've done Oly races with only Gatorade, water, and a little Clifbar on the bike. No gels.
