Subject: Asking COJ E-Mail issue

When VegasDiver and I travel there are some places we cannot send e-mails from out of Microsoft Outlook, we are on version 2007 but it was the same with the prior version. We get our service via cox.net we can go into the cox web service and send them from there. We've had this issue every time we go to Hawaii and now have the same issue here in Minnesota. There are other places we go an no problem.

Any thoughts/suggestions on why this is occuring? Thanks.

Honestly I think it's an Outlook thing because I had the same issue at my house (also Cox email), switched to Thunderbird, and the issue resolved itself. It's really annoying having to send emails through the web when you have your email client open right there!

One solution is to get a gmail account. You can set up gmail to check your cox.net account and you can set it up so that when you reply it appears to come from your cox.net account. I use my gmail account to pull in my roadrunner email and it works great.

This is probably a problem with your SMTP server settings.    If cox.net offers an option for SMTP servers that require authorization, you should probably use these.

SMTP servers are like the big blue mailboxes you see on the corner.  You should be able to drop a letter in any one and it will get to its destination.

"Back in the day" it worked that way.   However, SPAMmers started dropping millions of emails at a time into the box.    Sever administrators started locking mailbox.    When you're travelling to Hawaii, your Outlook client can't access an SMTP server on which it is authorized to "drop a letter."

Contact Cox for suggestions on how to setup your SMTP server settings while travelling.

Thanks for the responses.

I'll contact cox when we return and see if I can get the outlook setting to mesh with the cox settings.

Regarding the Gmail I like and for business I really like having all my incoming and outgoing e-mail in outlook for reference/documentation. Going into cox webmail is about the same I think as using the Gmail and what I do now is forward a copy to myself, which I think I would need to do with Gmail as well.

This is correct.

I work IT and Cox is our ISP in this neck of the woods. Cox.net by default uses location based authentication with their SMTP (outgoing) service. This mean, if you are using a Cox cable modem, you can send through their servers. The second you are using another ISP it doesn't work.

Call cox, I believe they have since allowed authentication based services if needed. If this is the case, you can send from anywhere.
