Subject: Orthodics or Gel Soles in Bike Shoes?
I just completed a sprint triathlon today in Long Branch NJ.  I put on socks (thin running socks) at T1.  They made my bike shoes a little loose and I noticed some serious arch pain during the bike and more so on the run after T2.

I've noticed this issue when just going out for rides before.  If I have a thin sock I don't get as much power...foot is a little too loose in the shoe (even when it's tightened the most).  So, should I put some Dr. Scholls gel orthodics in my bike shoes to tighten them up?  Anyone else do this or have a similar issue?

FYI, very proud of myself...shaved 9 minutes off my last race time!

I've been having problems with my arches from running.  I've been wearing dr scholls gel arch inserts in my running shoes and in my bike shoes.  They feel great!  I went to a podiatrist and he gave me some moldable OTC inserts and I hate them!  The gel ones are much better (and cheaper!).

Congrats on your race!

I suspect your cycling shoes are too big. I rarely wear socks at all on the bike, unless I'm going to run also then I wear thin socks.

I did that with my last pair of cycling shoes.  They were good for length but a little too thick top to bottom so adding just a little more in the bottom helped.

The stiffer the sole the better ... you'll lose power with gel inserts too ... you might try Superfeet (I recommend the green ones); they have good arch support, too.
