So even though it is not too cool down here in Atlanta, I want to start thinking about cold weather running clothing (so I can save up some extra cash). Anyone have recommendations on running tights and a jacket? I am used to just going in shorts and a longsleved shirt, but that really didnt cut it last year, pushing me inside on the treadmill. Ive been browsing Zappos.com for some stuff, but is there anything you guys swear by?

I like CWX tights.  When it's really cold I'll wear the CWX tights and then a looser pair of running pants over them.  For the rest of my gear, I like anything made by Brooks.  I have one of their running jackets that is bright orange, making it ideal for the morning/evening runs when the days are short.

If your hands get cold and regular running gloves arent' cutting it, try the Brooks' mittens.  They really help keep the fingers warm.

Firstly- anything will do.  Layers and zippers are the key.

that said- my favorite cool weather running shirt is actually a Nike brand.  It's really soft, stretchy and has good reflectors.  But I've picked up some stuff from Target - their Champion brand, that's just fine and very reasonably priced.  Favorite tights are from CW-X - they're Stabilyx.  I'm not sure I buy the whole stability thing, but they just feel like great tights.

I'm not sure about Zappo's pricing- usually not that great.  Try SierraTradingPost.com for some pretty good deals on outerwear and sports stuff.

most of my cold weather gear is Nike. i also love a beanie on my head. i can get away with minimal layers on my body as long as i keep the heat in my head.

I also swear by old navy fleece gloves. a buck a pair and i don't mind throwing them away if it gets too annoying to carry them after my hands get too hot.

I have a pair of Adidas "ClimaProof" wind pants that are AWESOME.

I swear by Under Armour ColdGear shirts, too.  One of them under a sweatshirt or just a regular long sleeved shirt and I'm ready for the Iditarod.

My fav piece of winter running clothing has got to be a vest.  I use my Pearl Izumi for cycling and running.

I really learned to tolerate the cold weather once I moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba. When living in Ohio, I was always scared off by the cold. Over the last 2 years, I've become quite comfortable in extreme cold. I have been amazed at how little clothing it really takes to stay warm. For days when I was running in temps of -40F (yes that's a minus in front of the 40) - actual temp by the way. In that weather, I wore a technical long sleeve shirt, fleece jacket (windproof). For the legs, I wore tri-shorts, thermals, and a layer of tights. Socks were just a single Smartwool sock. Shoes just regular shoes. Hat was just a regular winter hat (aka toque) with ear flaps and a face mask.

In temps of -20F, it felt like summer time.

Get out there and run in the cold ! It's a great time and once you're used to it, it really is nice out.

Wal-Mart has some leggings early in the winter that I snagged one year... they have two flavors.  The thin variety are useless, but they have a thicker pair that are "felty" on the inside.  Not all stores seem to get them and if you see them you better buy them.  A whole $10 for each of them and they work great for running and cycling.  Otherwise I have a under armour beanie and some Livestrong runners gloves that are invaluable for the colder weather.

I love love winter sports including running and skiing.  Layering is key.  Bottom is either CW-X tights or Lucy tights (or capris if its above 30 degrees or so).  I have a number of long sleeved tech tees from Target, Saucony, REI (their MTS Midweight is awesome!) and Lucy.  Slightly colder gets a zip neck T or hoodie.  Favorites are from The North Face or Lucy.  I just ordered the North Face Impulse 1/2 zip hoodie for this year and it has built in mitts.  I will probably also buy their new, totally awesome Apex Climateblock jacket.  I tried it on today and I am totally in love.  The fit and feel of this thing is so awesome.  And finally I have a Brooks Nightlife jacket for night time running.  I run the vast majority of my miles in the dark December-March.  My only rule is that if it's icy and dark out I go inside.  I hate running inside.

x2 on the CW-X tights. I love the compression, and they come in a variety of thicknesses.

Most of my winter running gear is from Nike too..I wear their hats, long tights, gloves & jacket--that I love. I picked that up at the Nike outlet for a great price.  It has tons of pockets!..I normally wear my sports bra, long sleeve tech shirt (Under Armour brand), tights and my jacket.  If its below freezing I may wear another layer--depends on the wind factor. If its really cold & taking in the cold air is brutal, I wear a neck warmer too ( single digits).

I swear by the Original Sporthill running pant. It got me through 3 winters in KY while running in college and they are cheap in today's world. I can easily go out in a pair when windchills are sub 20 (you are not going to see that in the ATL).

I have found this the place to get em.

2+ on the Sporthill stuff. It's not cheap, but it lasts forever. One caveat on their 3SP stuff: it sucks up dog hair. If you have a pet you'll be wearing it for your run.

I also like RaceReady's clothing. The tights are made of dryline, which isn't a compressive fabric like the Under Armor or 2XU stuff. Their long sleeved shirts are well made are fairly cheap.

Running in Austin definately has advantages in the Winter.  However, we did have a few months of running in sub-40 degree weather.  It is amazing how fast you can warm up while running.  Good gloves and something to cover ears was most important for me.  Otherwise, most of my running was done in shorts and a technical shirt.  If it was below freezing, I would wear a pair of light Nike pants over my shorts, but rarely a jacket.

Seems like it would just make the gear that much warmer!!

I love my Under Armour cold gear stuff - it's pricey though.
However, with all of the CW-X love on here - I may have to give them a go this winter....

X2 on the Walmart (Starter Brand) stuff.  For 10 bucks it is hard to beat them.

I should add that I use and earband from Nike and gloves (that have windbreaker type mitt covers) from Nike as well.  I've never run in the winter in a hat.  If I think I might need a little bit more I wear a hoodie and use that as needed.  It's rare though as my head overheats quickly.

My winter clothes are a mishmash of what's on sale  - I am not sure if they have Marshall's stores in you area but if so I would check them out as they have Under Armour (and Russel, Starter and a few others) at steep discounts.

Did they have compression pants too?   I found the starter long sleeve compression shirts for $10.
