Subject: profile design aerobars almost killed me
well i started a thread a while back asking what a good aero bar would be to replace the profile design ones that came on my trek equinox. The arm rests always bent down so bad that it would touch the base bar. I asked the bike shop and they said that it was normal. My arms always slid off once sweaty because the side profile was so low and the bending down did not help either. Well this weekend riding with a buddy the arm pad snapped and sent me into a zig zag pattern almost killing myself and all the other people riding around me. it was crazy scary, so now i'm looking at getting some new bars and was wondering what people liked? I want something with a high profile for my forearms to sit in, i was thinking something like these............

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=110583958147&Category=2918&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26its%3DI%26otn%3D2

anyone have any experience with these? does anyone recommend anything else........reasonably priced? the 1000 dollar zipps are waaaay outta my league! thanks for the time!

Your pads are too close together. Your weight should just be just about over where the pad bolts onto the bar. I broke up two pad bases figuring this out.

I agree,  i have wide shoulders and broke one of the brackets off while doing 20 mph, ( too much presure on the outside of the pads for too long.)  NOT fun !.  They replaced the braket for free even though the bike is about 1.5 years old.

I had profile design bars for 10 months before my right pad snapped.

2 weeks Before the pad snapped, i felt my upper body getting sore on my rides. My arms were tired from the aero position.  I noticed my saddle needed adjustment. I had to move the saddle nose down quite a bit.  I also angled my aero bars up more to help alleviate my upper body tension.

Then i was going 35mph down a hill, hit some bumps, and SNAP!!!  Broke the plastic arm holder thingy.

Profile sent me new arm holder thingies for free.  Turns out, when those things start to wear out, they flex a LOT more than they should untill they snap.  Mine was flexing so much, it threw off my whole positioning on my bike.  AFter the new ones came in, i noticed that i had to change my settings again to what they were before.

My experience with OVAL is a very good one.  I'm still running their base bars on my bike.  Honestly i think they make the lightest aluminum equipment EVER! My oval base bars + the stock oval shorty clip ons weighed less than the profile design aerobars alone.

Their arm rest cups your forarm much better.  But their cushions aren't as soft as profile's.

I had broke my plastic arm rests on my T2's last year and PD replaced them free of charge and no questions asked. At first I tried to contact them via the website and had no luck, but when I called them I got through and they sent me replacement arm rests that were metal and not plastic. I sort of liked the flex that the plastic ones gave, but feel safer with the metal ones.

Profile Design support was awesome when I contacted them about my cracked plastic arm rests.  The shipped me metal replacements free of charge.  If I break them, it will have been in an accident which is going to cause many more problems.  Surprised
