Subject: Training runs in Tri shorts?
Regular running shorts are starting to feel like wet garbage bags around my legs with all the sweat. Never used to be a problem, but now I'm running over an hour it's getting a little uncomfortable. I don't want to be "that guy" on the running trail, but it seems that my tri shorts would be a lot more comfortable.

whatever works for you...

I now only run in the shorter light running shorts, even totally wet i dont notice them.
Tri shorts/top/suit for me only come out on race day.

That's all I wear for any run is tri shorts.  Much more comfortable and virtually eliminates chaffing.

I do a lot of my runs in tri shorts as well.  They are pretty tight, but if that is what is most comfortable for you, rock em!  You shouldn't have any issues with being "that guy."

Wear whatever makes you comfortable. Nobody else has to run in what you do ... or not, so it's all you.

The reason I've stuck with running shorts over tri shorts (even though they are more comfy) is that I can put cell phone, key, money in the little pockets, and also, I don't want to wear out my good tri shorts too much.

I do ALL my runs in tri shorts. I may add other shorts over them for "fashion" sake (ask LKC...). When I weighed 200 from a lot of weight training, I came to realize why they were such a boon (the tri shorts).

either that, or get proper running shorts, not the ones with 9" legs.

Granted, the shorty ones aren't exactly stylish, but they do function.

just put a pair of normal shorts over the tri shorts if you are in a "spandex sensitive" environment.

otherwise, compression or tri shorts are way better than running shorts..

thank you.

Don;'t get me wrong, i'm all for wearing what works best for you, but i always wonder about triathletes saying they cant train in runnning shorts, bike shorts, or swim ones (pick correct type here).

Runners, cyclists, and swimmers all do pretty damn well in their correct gear, do the sports suddenly become dif when you race them back to back?

I run in tri shorts from time to time, if they float your boat over running shorts, us em.  We're all "that guy" already, look at that guy running, look at that guy riding his bike, look at that guy swimming laps, etc.  Who cares?

I do all my longer (6+ miles) in my tri shorts.  I was a little self concious about the spandex thing for a while, but then noticed how many other guys were running in either tri shorts, or compression shorts.  I say, wear them.  It is all about comfort for you, not what others think.

I've been on runs anywhere up to 13.1mi. in tri shorts.  I don't have an aversion to them, at all.

But, I gotta tell ya.....the Asics running shorts with the full length liner are the BOMB.  I've got several pairs, now....and unless I'm doing a brick (RARE!), I run in the Asics.

I wear running compression spandex 8" or 9" shorts for running. I generally throw a pair of actual shorts on over them just out of modesty. Right before a race I'll wear whatever tri shorts I'm going to use for the race on my long run just to make sure I've not changed enough to have owie spots when running in them.

This is what I wear for over 6 mile runs:

I was a running shorts and compression under amour shirt person for all my marathons and now going to rock my tri shirt with running shorts, but cannot rock out in tri shorts in a marathon yet.  I love my proper running shorts.

my run shorts can shafe my inner thigh once they become completely saturated (8+ miles).

Tri shorts don't seem to do that.... But i will say...... Whenever i do manscaping, i can't run in tri shorts for a week or two.  The tiny little hairs will rub my gooch raw.

Put on hydrocortisone  cream overnight and it will go away.

Hi can you tell me the model of Asics you are talking about. Did 1/2 marathon yesterday and my thighs are sore where the bottom of my running shorts has rubbed. do the liners reach to the same length as the outers?
thanks

My husband always runs in compression shorts with a pair of those mesh basketball shorts over them for modesty.  He loves the combo -- no chafing on his thighs, feels properly (ahem) supported, and no worries about letting it all hang out.  It also keeps a layer between him and the looser shorts to wick away the sweat.

For long run days, Compression shorts are best under the lightest weight shorts. I prefer to save my tri suit for races and prerace rehearsal runs.  If you ever fall on the trail the shorts may save your compression gear from tears.  There are only so many good miles in my tri suit, I'd hate to wipeout on a trail run the week before a race an have to start without my lucky Tyr tri kit.

Your mileage may vary.
