Subject: Top-tube carry bike rack

I have a top-tube carry bike rack on my truck and occasionally bring my bike to work to ride at lunch.  I like the bike rack but it leaves the front wheel/fork to turn.  I have tried putting a rubber band around the valve stem and then around the frame but they break and I think they pick up grease/petro products off the wheel and derterioate.  I tried using a piece of cotton rope but that is a pain to tied and not get too tight or too loose.  I now have a little strap with a little clip but I don't like it.  I tried a bungi cord but the darn hooks are too big.

Anyone know what I'm talking about and have suggestions?

~Mike

We loop a bungy from the rear wheel or the rear triangle through the front wheel and then back to a pedal or the crank.  Exact placement depends on which bike it is (mine is significantly smaller than my H's) or the length of the bungy.  You just want the tension to be tight enough to keep the wheels mostly immobile.

When the bikes go to the rack in the garage, the bungy goes with them so we always know where they are...

How is the hook too big?  Too big for what?

I have used a zip tie for longer trips, but I usually just cut it apart.  I'd hate to do that on a regular basis though, but there are some that you can open easier than others.  Otherwise, I just use use some 550 cord (basically a thin rope) and tie it.  I have a bungee cord that works real well on my MTB but I haven't found a good one for the tri bike.

I tried to use a bungee cord but was just going wheel to frame....a ver short distance and could the bungee cord was too big and had big hooks.  I guess I could try a longer bungee and hook the rear wheel and front wheel.  Yeah, that might work.

I use a large velcro strap that I got from Home Depot.  I thread it through the rim and around the downtube.  It's better than the bungee because it's not elastic and doesn't stretch.

Ah yeah - we tried to find short ones but they were too hard to locate.  Just get creative - wrap it around things...make a loop and hook the hooks to each other if you don't want them on your frame, etc...  Each time we load up our bikes, it takes a second or two to remember how we bungied them the time before (it doesn't help that we are always using different bikes)!

My bike rack has a hole at the bottom, I guess for hooks and such.  I usually run the cord from that hole, thru the front wheel, around the frame, then back to the hole.  Otherwise, you could run it front wheel, thru the back wheel, and to the crank arm
