I think the recent "Japanese remake genre" are really scary...  In fact, I look back at some of the old movies I thought were scary and laugh (Friday the 13th and Halloween, etc)...

IE, The Grudge and The Ring...  Those are the ones I watch from the kitchen incase I need to duck away quickly!

OTOH, I watched the first 10-15 minutes of Paranormal Activity hearing it was scary, and it almost seemed silly to me.  Granted, I'm sure I didn't give it enough chance to get scary?

I here the original Japanese versions are pretty nuts.
I think that there is one called "The Audition" that is pretty twisted.
Anyone see it?

I watched a little bit of Hostel on cable recently.  Don't get it.   It's disgusting, not sure why anyone would want to let those images into their psyche....

Paranormal Activity I personally thought was retarded.  But then again, I don't do scary movies as they don't hold much water for me anyway.  I have a hard time finding most of them disturbing or scary so don't take my word for it.

Gearboy, it will be a long day trying to explain the difference between a sociopath and a psychopath and even longer to explain that sociopaths are more common than most people think.

I'm also a pretty big horror buff, as much as it may creep my wife out...

Anyway, I LOVED "paranormal activity".  I've also heard mixed things from others, so I guess it's personal preference.  If you liked Blair Witch (my favorite horror movie of all time), then you'll like PA.

The original SAW is very very good.  I like the sequals, though they pale in comparison.  I'm glad they are finally ending it with 7.

I liked Quarantine alot, though I've heard the original "[Rec]" is better.

The remake of "The Crazies" was pretty good.

Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead were both great comedy horror movies.

I'm assuming you saw 28 days later.  If not, it's a must watch.  The sequal is "Ok, not great"

The Descent was good.  If you have clausterphobia or are scared of the dark, this movie would terrify you.  I just watched the sequal this week, and found it "OK"

If you like camp, the Afterdark Horrorfest movies can be sat through, but otherwise steer clear.  I've seen about half of them (they are on the 4th year) and there are a few gems but most suck.

Rob Zombie's "House of 1000 corpses" and "Devil's Rejects" are very messed up.  I actually liked the 2nd much better than the first.

See now I liked Blair Witch and I hated Paranormal Activity.

I look forward to that one. Well, not that it is a good flick but that I hope it will spur folks into some sort of action.

I am surprised no one has said "The Exorcism of Emily Rose."

To sleep better after watching, turn off your clocks so you can't see "3am." Me, I slept near a grandfather clock that chimes... I would stay awake to make sure it didn't chime three times.

Haven't really watched any in the past few years, however my #1 has to be Amityville Horror, probably because I was too young (7?) to see it.

The other one is the Shining.  I used to work in a hotel that had the exact pattern in the hallways as the scene when the sisters popped up, and I used to get freaked thinking about it!

It's been years, too, since I've seen one.  It took a little time for me to remember this one - Terror Train (early '80s) which starred Jamie Lee Curtis.  I remember the part where the killer ripped her hoop earring off her ear.  *cringe*

It wasn't within the last 5 years, but Signs with Mel Gibson scared the absolute bejesus out of me.  I even watched it during the day and didn't want to sleep that night.

I will not name the movie, as I do not recommend anyone EVER watch it. I'm afraid typing it's name would spark your interest enough for you to download it (as, thankfully it is not available in the US... and hopefully never will be.) and, I mean it when I say, although you might *think* you want to watch it... you do not.

I have always had an "iron stomach" when it came to grotesque, "shock" and thriller... however, this film goes 100% beyond that. It is the only movie that has ever given me nightmares. When I say, after watching this movie, I literally felt like I needed to scrub myself with an SOS pad and Clorox... I truly mean it. Images I saw can NEVER be erased. And yet, it was *better* written, acted, and filmed than Inception...which is saying a LOT.

All three of my friends who watched it with me agree, it is both one of the most genius movies, and all agree, it was absolutely the most unbelievably horrific film ever... and none of us will ever...ever... watch it again. Deleted from the hard drive, and the disc broken and thrown away.

I suppose I will say, it is a 2010 film. Don't go any farther down the rabbit hole.

"Saw", "Hostel", etc. (I like SCARY, not gruesome for gruesome's sake.)

Hostel definitely falls into the gruesome category.  But Saw (#1) is worth watching.  The acting is terrible as you'd expect from a low budget horror film but the premise is creepy and there's a good twist at the end.

Nah, the Human Centipede is tame, and awful campy (the professor really hams it up)

It was an odd movie however!
