Having served in the Corps, I watched many go through what seemed like a rite of passage-getting a tattoo. Usually it was some Marine Corps related symbol on the forearm, shoulder, or back. Id say it was 50/50 with those who regretted it versus those who didn't. I myself got a tattoo, though it was a tribal on my arm. As many have echoed here, tattoo's are very personal and can be a reminder of a time in your life. They are also considered works of art by some and proudly displayed. Do I regret mine? At first it was cool and then it wasn't so much, especially when your kids are the ones asking you about it. Now, as I grow more sentimental of my twenties, I don't regret it and wouldn't have it removed. I see tattoo's as a way to express yourself to others. Some will look at you differently, and you should prepare for that if you decide to do it. However, if you're proud of your accomplishment, want others to know, and a medal doesn't cut it, then I say go for it! |

If you are already asking, I'd say don't. I agree with this. I only have 2, but one of them took hrs. and covers most of my arm. I got them on my 30's and never regretted it, but if your doubting yourself now I wouldn't do it. |

I got my first tattoo when I was 18. I'm 35 now and just got my latest one 4 months ago. Some of my early ones (before I found a theme that I really liked) could be better, but I don't regret them at all. They are a road map of my adult life. They don't have to have some deep meaning either...I just love the art, and I love the way they look on my body. I had full sleeves while working in a professional environment....if the company I worked for (and there was only one) I wore long sleeves....and let my work speak for my abilities. The tattoos were never a problem. Now I'm a stay at home dad and very active in my kids school lives and I've never had any other parents have an issue with the way I look. There kids come over to play, I lead my sons cub scout den etc. I love being tattooed, and it's one of the only things in life that can never be taken from me. |

Regular 107 Lynchburg, Va | Subject: RE: Triathlon tattoo regret? I raced IMFL 2008 and said when it's all over I would get an MDot. It's 2010 and still no ink. The thought of it during training was exciting, but when it was all over the excitment of the tat faded. So maybe after the second one..maybe. Right now I am glad I didn't get it, just for the fact I was not happy with my IMFL time. Lets see what happens if I break 11 hours. So I agree with waiting and thinking it over when the excitment fades. For all who have tat... it's all good, it's personal, no one can tell you to get or not to get it. |

My husband knew this really good experienced artist, went to visit him 3-4 months after my first IM, he put together a drawing of what it would be like. I made an appointment and canceled as I wasn't 100% sure. I don't regret changing my mind or exploring the option. We have 5 kids 12-21 and would prefer they not get tattoos without considerable consideration and maturity so not getting one after considering it I think was good for them to watch. |

We had trained together since we were thirteen years old, so close to a decade of 3-5 times a week of high intensity exercise (sound familiar?). We experienced a lot of intense emotions, half of which had to do with out of control adolescent hormones, but I thought martial arts would be a part of my life forever. although I look back fondly at that time I have grown into a different person. Everyone decided to get tattoos because martial arts was our way of life. I changed my mind and I am extremely grateful that I don't have an enormous dragon tattoo on my back shoulder. I'm 37 now and I would have to explain to everyone who asked that I used to be really into maritial arts. Training helped make me into the person I am today and I thought I would do it forever. Life is long. You never know were it will take you. Never in a million years would I think I would be posting on a Triathlete board getting ready to do my first sprint in March. Perhaps you are different. Maybe you will be doing KONA when you are seventy. you are who you are because of the adventures you take, not by how you mark yourself. That said I have no problem how people choose to live their life. I think its fantastic you accomplished an Ironman. I think its fantastic you have found something you love to do. And I think its fantastic that neither you nor I know what adventures are in store for us in the future! If you want to get inked do it and everybody else can suck it. Well said..... |

Well, I'm doing IMFL in a few weeks and have been thinking about it. If I get one, it will be small. It will incorporate the IM, but it won't just be the IM logo. I have some thoughts. And, it would be somewhere I could cover it up most of the time but show it off if I want - like when in a bathing suit. This is all IF I choose to go through with it. I like the idea of getting a henna tatto of it first to see how you like it. I have had a henna tattoo before and really enjoyed it. And I don't mind tatoos, I'm just a weenie when it comes to pain, so we will see. |

Got my first one 7 years ago at age 55 and always looking forward to the next one. After my first one, my mother said "I hope you're not getting any more" but she has since gotten used to the fact that I'm not her 14 year old son any more. My wife has 4 of her own as well and loves each one. I agree with some of the other sentiments...think about it for a while. If you're not 100% sure right now, it's the wrong time to do it.  |

It is the birth flowers for the months we were all born, my husband, me, and both of our boys. I wanted something to honor my family. I look at it every day and it reminds me how precious my family is to me. I don't need a tattoo to remind myself that but I love it! If getting a tattoo is what you want to do to help you remember what you accomplished that day, then get one. If you are unsure, I would wait and look at other ways to mark your accomplishment! |

I didn't want the "sticker" that stuck on, because then I couldn't move it to another car (and I know I'm gonna need one of those sooner or later, hopefully later). You could put the sticker on refridgerator-magnet backing, then you could put it where ever you wanted, whenever you wanted. I have a tat design I've been hanging onto for some 9 months now... I still want it it done, just need to get the finances set aside for it. |
